I was diaognosed with Type II last week and have been on 500mg of Metaforim since 5/22.
My question is, I get an 8 inch spot on my right calf, on top, that goes numb after standing or walking for any distance. Could this possibly be connected to my diabetes?
It actually started prior to my diaognosis but it seems to be coming more frequently.
I asked the Doctor about it and he just said something about a pinched nerve, but he didn't give it much thought or consideration.
thanks for the feedback:cool:

Not taking metformin, but had the same response about an area on my thigh.

Harold, Actually, you are correct. It is my thigh that goes numb, (along with my brain). Do you think this is tied to the diabetes or is it unrelated?
Has yours gone away or do you still get it from time to time?

No idea if it's related or not. It does it when my bg's are are in the normal range, so that is no help. Yes, it still happens, and sometimes it hurts to the touch. Then the pain goes to a burning type sensation. It could be circulation that's related to diabetes or a pinched nerve in the lower back.

I am curious as to what readings I should be getting before and after eating. For example, today before breakfast i tested at 67, but after eating oatmeal with fruit, I tested at 225. Is 225 too high after eating? Is this normal? Or is there a range i should shoot for after a meal? thanks for the feedback.

67???? That seems WAY too low and 225 is WAY too high! My doc told me to call him,if I ever go below 70.I am on 1000mg of metformin a day, and average around 115 to 120 ish. Check with your doc, he will probably increase your metformin dose.

Actually, My doctor told me to stop taking the Metaformin if my reading was below 80. I did call my doctor and spoke with the Nurse and she told me this is normal...but I don't quite buy that. That's why I'm checking for feedback from DF.
Thanks for the tips.

Hi Dave: I think you may have to rethink your b/fast menu, as you shouldn't be having anything to make you go that high, esp. if you're starting out at 67! I see you are on metformin....when do you take it? If you're taking it at bedtime, perhaps you should take it earlier in the day, maybe after b/fast...this way your mornings may not be so low. I'm on 500 mg twice daily, and I take one with b/fast, one at dinner.
Do your other readings jump that high after a meal?
I was told to aim for 110 or less fasting and then 140 or less 2 hrs after start of meals, and random readings of 110 or less.
In my opinion, if the rest of your readings are in line, you don't need a medication adjustment (except maybe for time you take it), you just need to have less carbs with your b/fast.

67 is not too low, but you do not want to go much lower. You could have been on the rebound when you ate breakfast. So you had your meal and your liver contributing to your glucose load. How long after eating did you test at 225? Yes, it is too high even for an hour post meal. Which it would be best to try and keep under 180 or at least 200. What's normal varies by whom you ask. An 80 to 120 is a good range to shoot for, but until you get some control try to get it under 140 2 hours post start of your meal. You can do further tweaking after you gain some control. Some people have a target range of 80 to 100, however that one is up to you.

it was about an hour after eating that i tested 225. It's something about oatmeal that does it to me. it is unsweetened, but i do add raison and fresh blueberries and blackberries along with some raw almonds. after most other breakfast's i test around 150. it's a live and learn process, i know.
I'm gonna try the steel cut oats and see how i react to that. i'll let you know.

You may have to just give up the oatmeal...sounds like it doesn't agree with you. Try some eggs or egg beaters with a couple slices of bacon or turkey bacon and you could even add a little fruit...then check 2 hrs after your first bite and see how those #'s are.
I would suggest staying away from anything that causes you to go that high. Perhaps as your metformin reaches optimal effectiveness you may have more freedoms, but for me, there are things I don't eat simply because it will put me over 140 2 hrs later.
