Article: Diabetes Information That Everyone Should Know (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=28436)

I didn't know that excess intake of oil and sugar was a cause, that we should avoid all kinds of sugary and sweet foods and eat bitter melon herbs, that starchy food products are not easily digestible, that gooseberry helps to cure diabetes and brings the blood sugar level to normal, that chewing (8-10) curry leaves in an empty stomach will bring sugar level in urine and blood to normal. I don't know what to say.

Let them know what you think - I did:

I would just like to register a strong objection to the article featured at American Chronicle: Diabetes Information That Everyone Should Know (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=28436) - 'Diabetes Information That Everyone Should Know'.

The article is deeply misleading and in many places, just plain false. Contrary to the beliefs expressed in the article, there is no such thing as a cure for diabetes. Diabetes is an incredibly complex disorder of the endocrine system primarily caused by an autoimmune response. There are also other causes of the condition which create severe insulin resistance, the causes of which are not yet fully understood.

Mr. Mutt makes several incorrect claims that are in clear violation of your submission policy, namely 'No defamatory, false, or obscene material may be submitted or posted' and 'Not make any statement that Author knows, or should have reason to know is untruthful and/or unlawful.'

Either Mr. Mutt is ignorant of the pharmacology behind diabetes, or Mr. Mutt is aware that he is making incorrect statements, which means he is in violation of your site's submission policy. Either one of which should be suitable grounds for this article to be removed immediately from American Chronicle. The following statements are well known throughout the medical community to be incorrect:

'Excess intake of oil and sugar' - excessive intake of oil and sugar does not cause T1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune reaction. Neither does it cause T2 diabetes - although a diet that is high in fats and carbohydrates is recognised as potentially contributing to the development of T2 diabetes.

'Increased cholesterol level' - there is no medical evidence to suggest an elevated cholesterol level causes diabetes. Elevated cholesterol is in fact recognised as a possible symptom of T2 diabetes.

'Stress' - There is no medical evidence to suggest diabetes in either form can be caused by stress.

'It is also an important factor in accelerating the hardening and narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), leading to strokes, coronary heart disease, and other large blood vessel diseases.' - the key point here is to do with the level of treatment for diabetes. Mr. Mutt is portraying these complications as an inevitability of having diabetes. This is not the case. Untreated diabetes can contribute to atheroscleroris. Having diabetes does not.

'It also increases the risk of gum disease and tooth loss' - there is no medical evidence to suggest that diabetes causes an increased incidence in dental problems.

'Diabetic patients also suffer from impotence or erectile dysfunction.' - Incorrect. Whilst untreated diabetes can be a cause of impotence, this is by no means the case for all patients with diabetes. Indeed it isn't even the case for the majority of patients with diabetes.

'Avoid all kinds of sugary and sweet foods.' - incorrect. In fact people with diabetes are advised to maintain access to foods containing sugar both for a regular diet and also to prevent the possible treatment side-effect of hypoglycaemia.

'Eat bitter melon herbs either in powdered form (powder of bitter melon seeds) or cooked vegetables. It is very beneficial in the treatment of diabetes. You can also drink it in the form of soup.' - there is no medical evidence that suggests bitter melon assists in reducing insulin resistance or the production of insulin.

'Do not take starchy food products, as they are not easily digestible.' - this is incorrect. In many respects the human body is designed to primarily use starchy food sources. For instance, human saliva contains the enzyme amylaze, which breaks down starches into maltose and dextrine. Digestion of starch takes place before the food is even swallowed. This hardly qualifies starch as 'not easily digestible'.

'Include onion, sprouts, beans, garlic, tomatoes in the diet as it helps in lowering the sugar level in the blood.' - there is no medical evidence to suggest this. In fact the sugars in tomatoes will actually cause an elevation in blood sugars.

'Do not eat junk food and oily food as this will control your level of cholesterol, lowers your blood pressure level, and diabetes' - junk food and oily food make no overall difference to whether or not you have diabetes.

'Gooseberry helps to cure diabetes and brings the blood sugar level to normal.' - there is no medical evidence that gooseberries have a reductive effect on blood sugar. Again, like tomatoes, the fructose in gooseberries will actually raise blood sugar levels.

'Curry leaves also helps in controlling body weight and also diabetes. Chewing (8-10) curry leaves in an empty stomach to bring sugar level in urine and blood to normal.' - there is no medical evidence for this.

'Dry the leaves of mango tree and make its powder in a grinder. Mix the dry powder (1 teaspoon) of mango leaves in a glass of water and drink it everyday to cure diabetes.' - as of yet, there is no cure for either type of diabetes. This advice is in fact dangerous as it suggests a cure is ready available and may cause those on conventional treatment plans to abandon their current treatment regime, with potentially disastrous results for their health.

'Soak few fenugreek seeds in water and keep them overnight. Have these softened seeds in the morning.' - I accept that there are no actual claims made as to what this achieves, but clearly the implication is that this will somehow have a beneficial effect on blood sugar levels. Again, there is no evidence for this.

'Garlic contains allicin, which works at reducing the sugar level in the blood. It also brings about the disintegration of cholesterol in the body.' - allicin has no documented effect on blood sugar.

'Jamun has also specific action on the pancreas, which controls the conversion of starch to sugar. The seeds of the fruit have better effects than the pulp.' - there is no medical evidence to suggest that Jamun has any particular affect on the function of the pancreas.

Given the level of factual inaccuracy in this article, I find it unacceptable for you to continue to host such misinformation on what is supposed to be a factual news site. At the very least, the author has violated the terms and conditions which presumably you have put in place precisely to prevent such articles damaging the credibility of your site.

I look forward to hearing from you soon with news that you have either removed this article from American Chronicle or that you have requested Mr. Mutt substantiate his dangerous advice with scientific evidence,

Many thanks,

editor@ultio.net - send your concerns here.

It won't get taken off but it made me feel better anyway.

It's funny to read an article such as that and then see not to long after it's publish a study like this....

Survey Reveals Significant Public Lack of Diabetes Awareness (http://wwwp.medtronic.com/Newsroom/NewsReleaseDetails.do?itemId=1174939044178&lang=en_US)

nearly 80 percent of the American public does not know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes

In the survey, nearly 70 percent of people incorrectly believed a cure existed for type 1 diabetes. The majority of respondents mentioned proper diet (25%), weight loss (18%), exercise (22%), insulin (16%) or other medication (12%) – as ways patients could cure their type 1 diabetes

I'm getting tired of this quack stuff too. The more I read on the net the more it appears to be genetic. I'm insulin resistant, it looks like insulin resitance is due to damaged dna, I gotta dig to to find what college of medicine found this but they did find a common damaged sequence. And get this, the sequence can make you prone to being overweight. That's why some of are a normal bmi with type 2, others are skinny,
and some are a higher bmi. And not all of us are sedintary with this disease. I admit my job has me behind a computer,
but I go for a hike during lunch, play softball, go for a bike ride with my kids. My kids are older so it's not a leisure pace, my kids want to kick my butt and tend to average 17mph down the bristol bike path. And when I mow my lawn I don't use a tractor. I've got a gas push mower, not power propelled either, this way I still get a work out.. about 3/4 of an acre.
Quacks that post miracle home remedy cures piss me off.
I tried all that **** in the beginning. It took me a year to get
on someting stronger that metformin. It took an elevated mocroalbumin level to wake me up. I'm not settling for readings of 170 anymore. And a wonder supplement isn't gonna cut it. Trust me I tried them. even 1000mg of chromium
picolinate a day for 4 months. And I've been working out heavily since I was diagnosed. The biggest drop I had in my BG so far was due to Januvia. I'm worried about taking it but also worried about high bg levels so I am willing to take the risk for now.
