Good morning! I'm new to this forum. I'm 49 years old and live in Louisiana. I've been insulin dependent since 1992. I have a question if anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it. My prescription for Lantus has run out and my doctor refuses to extend it until I come. The problem with that is I've been unemployed for seven months and can't afford the office visit. I explained this to no avail.
Any suggestions?

I have four vials of NPH that I thought I was going to have to throw away because they expire August 1st and I was going to start using my first vial of Lantus that expires in October. What I can do is continue using NPH for a while longer and send you my first four vials of Lantus. I will have to send it to you on Monday since I don't want it sitting somewhere tomorrow and Sunday. There is no local UPS building I can take it to for overnight shipment. I can call UPS and ask them to pick it up Monday but I worry that it will sit in one of their hot vehicles most of that day. The best thing would probably be for me to take it to the post office Monday afternoon and overnight it to you but I do worry that they won't get it to you before Wednesday so it may still be hot although I think I can put eight frozen ice packs in the package. If it gets to you okay, I hope you'll have about a 16 week supply of the insulin. Send my a personal message or e-mail with your mailing address and I'll have it out some way by Monday afternoon.

Kaye, you can always go to the ER when you are high and get treated. They will probably give you a prescription. I have a friend whose husband left her without health insurance at the age of 61, she went to a free clinic in her town and got her medicine free. Welcome to the forum. Isn't LGVincent sweet, he really means it when he offers help?

When you get the money to see a doctor, make sure it's a new one... In the mean time, there are drug assistance programs available.

Welcome aboard :wavey:

Don't forget the many other forum members who have made offers to help those in need and I've received help from many, too.

On top of the advice given above:
Since lantus is a 'maintanance drug' usually if you ask the pharmacist nice enough, and show him/her you are educated well about it while talking with him/her, they will prescribe it for you on the spot. In some states I believe it is legal to just purchase it OTC as well. I have never had a problem getting a pharmacist to sell me insulin in the 31 years I have had it when no rx's were left. Try to stay even toned and don't get emotional when talking with them. They know insulin is a diabetics lifeline.
