Odd blood sugar levels

Hi

I am a 38 year old man from Denmark, currently living in Italy.

I am not aware of being diabetic or not, but last week i went to the hospital to get a series of general blood tests, and my gluscose level was 367 mg/dl in the morning (fasting)

Since that morning I have been checking for lists of symptoms of diabetes, but I do not have any of the symptoms, oddly enough.

Naturally I went to my doctor a couple of days later, who then tried a glucometer test (late afternoon) and the gluscose level was 55 mg/dl....extremely opposite of the results of the "fasting" morning test a few days earlier.

I have since done another fasting morning test with glucose level at 325 mg/dl

My doctor now wants me to do further tests, such as ultrasound scanning etc.

My doctor can not understand that I experience both these extremely high and also very low levels in the same day.

Again, I feel no symptoms of diabetes...none.
I feel well and healthy...

Have any of you experienced something like this?

You could be a type 1.5 and in the early stages of honeymooning. At times your body will not be able to provide enough insulin.

I recommend you ask your doctor to complete an A1C and possibly a Peptice C and/or GAD Antibody. Those three tests will help to determine if you are diabetic and your type.

As your body adjusts to different levels you may not get all those systems or you may think some are associated with something else.

That's not unusual. As the beta cells die off (the cells that produce insulin), their timing can be out of whack. Your beta cells probably just took longer to make and spit out the insulin you needed to reduce your high blood sugar, and were unable to react to your low in an appropriate period of time. Please see an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes, and you will have a much better chance of being steered onto the right path. At the very least, you need antibody tests and an A1c.

I did not mention that I found out about these levels because my dermatologist wanted me to do some blood test because I have been plagued by cysts.

First she made me take 2x12 tablets of 1000 mg of Augmentin, and straight after that she prescribed me 5 boxes of Zithromax (5 x 3 tablets) . So I had just finished all these antibiotic treatments when she told me to go and have my blood tested. This is a lot of antibiotica for such a short period (8 weeks)

Went and talked to my doc again yesterday and he said that the liver could easily have been damaged by such an ecessive use of antibiotica (some macrolid) over such a short period causing a very unstabile insulin production, as my GGT/AST etc had VERY high levels too. At the second test (1 week after initial test) both glucose and liver enzyme levels had dropped app 15%.

Anyways, going for more tests next week.
