I just happened upon this forum today and have not read much yet. What I have read is pretty good stuff.
I am 59 1/2 y/o health professional. Diagnosed 12 years ago. Began NPH right away and eventually got such a great honeymoon that I got rid of any meds for a while. I thought I had beaten diabetes completely. Was I in for a surprise.
In 2003 I took a stress test at the suggestion of my personal doc and had a problem so I had a cath and the next day I had a quad CABG. Great recovery and just exercise and Metformin.
A couple of years ago my Bgs got too high and I started using Lantus at bed time. First it was 12u, then 15, then 18, and so on.
About a month ago my HbA1c was 8.4 after many years of good control. Started using Novolin 70/30 and things are settling down pretty well. I am basically doing a loosely applied sliding scale and it works very well so far. I need a little tighter control but that will come with some time.
I bought a OneTouch UltraSmart and have been enjoying it because of the tracking features.
I really don't have much problem with having diabetes and I don't really mind all the pokes. It's just part of life.
I have been considering a pump. I think I would enjoy the flexibility. I came close to using a pump when I was first diagnosed and my guess is that if I had used a pump I might not have had such bad CHD.
My lovely bride, Sally Jeanne, is diabetic and she takes a combination of Metformin an Gliburide. She is doing quite well. I tried her on Lantus for a while but she didn't like that much and she is more comfortable with one test a day and no shots. Her control is very good. Don't know her current HbA1c.
I don't post much on these forums but I like to read them. You probably won't see much from me but I will look in occasionally. You are all to be commended for your sincere desire to learn and help each other. Diabetes is a tough deal, but we just have to play the hand we are dealt. It can be considered to be a positive because it can increase an appreciation of the good things in life. Kind of like making lemonade when life gives you lemons.
Best wishes to you all.
