I just happened upon this forum today and have not read much yet. What I have read is pretty good stuff.

I am 59 1/2 y/o health professional. Diagnosed 12 years ago. Began NPH right away and eventually got such a great honeymoon that I got rid of any meds for a while. I thought I had beaten diabetes completely. Was I in for a surprise.

In 2003 I took a stress test at the suggestion of my personal doc and had a problem so I had a cath and the next day I had a quad CABG. Great recovery and just exercise and Metformin.

A couple of years ago my Bgs got too high and I started using Lantus at bed time. First it was 12u, then 15, then 18, and so on.

About a month ago my HbA1c was 8.4 after many years of good control. Started using Novolin 70/30 and things are settling down pretty well. I am basically doing a loosely applied sliding scale and it works very well so far. I need a little tighter control but that will come with some time.

I bought a OneTouch UltraSmart and have been enjoying it because of the tracking features.

I really don't have much problem with having diabetes and I don't really mind all the pokes. It's just part of life.

I have been considering a pump. I think I would enjoy the flexibility. I came close to using a pump when I was first diagnosed and my guess is that if I had used a pump I might not have had such bad CHD.

My lovely bride, Sally Jeanne, is diabetic and she takes a combination of Metformin an Gliburide. She is doing quite well. I tried her on Lantus for a while but she didn't like that much and she is more comfortable with one test a day and no shots. Her control is very good. Don't know her current HbA1c.

I don't post much on these forums but I like to read them. You probably won't see much from me but I will look in occasionally. You are all to be commended for your sincere desire to learn and help each other. Diabetes is a tough deal, but we just have to play the hand we are dealt. It can be considered to be a positive because it can increase an appreciation of the good things in life. Kind of like making lemonade when life gives you lemons.

Best wishes to you all.

Hi WildBill, Glad you stopped by to say hello. I hope you do check in once in awhile and offer your great advice.

My mother just had quad CABG in February and is still recouping from the whole thing. Glad you are doing so well.

Quad CABG is not a picnic. It's one of the most significant surgeries a person can undergo. Hope she and you are doing well.

I spent 2 1/2 months in recovery and I went to 26 sessions of cardiac rehab. One of my rehab nurses was also a diabetes educator and that was a great help.

The diet, exercise, and stress reduction involved in cardiac rehab are essentially the same as the diabetic protocols.
There were several diabetics in the rehab that I attended.

Best of luck to you and your mother.
