welcome mommy2lexi!i know steroids can raise your blood sugar, but i do not think they can cause diabetes-cuz i've never heard of "reversible"diabetes.once you have diabetes,it's with you for life...do you know how high your blood sugars are?what a great hubby you have to give you a kidney!i hope you continue a speedy recovery!take care, trish

shockme, there is a kind of diabetes called "trauma induced diabetes" that is temporary and occurs after something like a car accident. I even know someone who got it.

I've heard of steroid-induced diabetes (generally from prednisone) but I haven't heard about it going away. Perhaps some other people here will know more about that.

Hi There. :) Wow, you go all out. May I ask
why you needed a new kidney? If not, that's
okay. That's Wonderful that your Hubby was
a match and even Nicer that he gave you one
of his.

Did your Dr. actually say that you have Diabetes?
My Dad was on Prednisone for his RA for a while
which raised his blood sugars but he wasn't a
Diabetic. Do you mean you are weaned off of
Pred. or you will be weaned off it? I hope that it
turns out okay for you also.

Strange, I was on 30 mgs. of Pred. for about a
mth. March/06(sure raised my sugars) and I've
been on different dosages of it for over an yr. now
and it didn't cause me to develop Diabetes. ;)
I wish you a fast and easy recovery. Take Care.

In working with a transplant patient, I do know that his sugar levels were also elevated by steroids (& in his case, TPN <total parental nutrition> as well). He did go on an insulin drip for several days, as they were previously chasing high sugars with just "boluses" of insulin into the TPN (wasn't working). That said, once he was off the steroids, he no longer needed the insulin drip.

I will also say that in my four years of working as a vet. tech., I've seen both dogs & cats develop Diabetes after prolonged prednisone (steroid) usage. Often, these animals were being treated for allergies (i.e. grass, etc.) with the Prednisone, but after being on the meds for so long, they ultimately developed Diabetes. My mother-in-law's dog also developed Diabetes (& he too, was on Prednisone for an extended period of time).

I can't speak for everyone (as we're all different), but I'd definitely say it's plausible.
