It seems to me nowadays that when i drink a diet coke i seem to get dehydrated. im talking very dehydrated.... Not only that but i also get stomach aches if i drink it too fast. I think i may be eating too many sugar alchohols and its the reason i feel so dehydrated. I only have mabye 1-2 servings of these a day and 3-4 max. Some days i wont have any. I'd say i average around 2 servings a day.

Anyone else have these same symptoms?

This has only been happening the past 3-4 months even though ive been on diet coke and other sugar subsitutes since i was diagnosed with diabetes.

Sugar alcohols and the artificial sweetener used in Diet Coke (aspartame) aren't the same. Do you drink or eat anything else that contains aspartame? I wonder if it's the acidity or the carbonation of the soda that's giving you stomach aches. Are you drinking less water these days, and maybe that's making you dehydrated?

I am a Diet Coke addict and used to go through 4 x 2 liter bottles a week; now I'm down to 2 x 2 liter bottles a week and drinking a lot more water, but I never experienced any stomach aches, even on 4 bottles a week (although I'm sure I adapted to a constant state of dehydration). Caffeinated sodas will make you pee more, and this is what can lead to dehydration. So what happens if you drink caffeine-free?

I too is an diet coke addict. I go through about 3-4 liters a week.
Never had any problems with dehydration.
sugar alcohols makes my stomach bad though, so i stay away from them.

I used to drink Diet Coke all day. I quit because it hurt my stomach. I kept eliminating other things thinking it had to be something else because, I liked my Diet Coke so much, but alas it was the coke. I drink Iced tea and Crystal light and have no problem, so it is not the sweetener. Any carbonated beverage causes problems, but I also have limited my coffee to one cup a day, as it causes stomach discomfort, so I sometimes wonder if it is the caffeinne. Too much coffee also makes me feel dehydrated.

Caffeine is a natural diuretic. I wouldn't rely on any beverage containing it for hydration.

I'm a diet coke freak and i'm sure that not just makes you dehydrate you and that what makes you drink more. But more to the coke that is makes you more awake and also make you stay up late too. So you get to sleep in also.
When i was in rehabilitation, I was not allowed to drink coke and so makes sleeping a real hit. So if you think that you have not had a good sleep, Then don't drink coke.

I think the reason I drink so much diet soda is when I was in DKA and didn't know it I couldn't get enough water. After that I couldn't stomach to even look at it.

well I went into the hospital at 122 pounds. severly dehydrated.... Nowadays i only drink Diet Pepsi sans caffine. sudeenly gained 20 pounds (which may sound like alot, but I am 6 feet 1 inch) now being 154 at six one works for me... but I refuse to drink caffinated drinks...
caffine is a diuretic (thats years of medical school) sooooooo move to a non caffinated bev... you should do better

Diet Pepsi is what keeps me functioning. Never been bothered with dehydration from it. I also use aspartame in coffee and tea. No probs there either. But ... we are all different.
