My endo is anal about foot care, completely understandable
.....but geez! I live in AZ people, you know 120 degree summers!! I am 29 and have had "D" just over a year, with a 6.5 A1C. So, I was very irritated when she tries to tell me to stop wearing anything between my toes (toe ring, flip flops) We give up so much for this disease and she wants me to give up my flip flops! LOL

Meh. I wear them all the time, even to work. As long as your BG is well-controlled, and you check your feet regularly, I don't see what the big deal is.
Sometimes I think doctors forget what it's like to be human, especially those who aren't D themselves.

Heck, I wore flip flops to my last appointment with the endo. He didn't bat an eye! (and I figure it was at least 0.5 lb lighter on the scale! :D

I wear flip flops also. If you have feeling in your feet and can feel if they are rubbing then "whatever". I am sure she worries about you banging your toes or something, but you could do that in your own home on your couch.

I have wide feet and bunions. If I didn't wear flip flops, I would have the sorest feet with rub sores all over it. No way will I wear shoes in the summer.

Pshaw! Is all I have to say...

(and I doubt I have ever said "pshaw!" ever before)

I wear flip-flops all the freaking time and couldn't live without them - though my mother often looks at me warily when I have them on around her. She's my mom, it's her job.

Anyway, I will say that make sure you DON'T walk long distances in them. I've made that mistake when traveling and it's bad! Lots of blisters, which for me take at least a month to heal completely, and usually leave scars. So just make sure that if you are wearing flip-flops they are pretty good ones that aren't leaving marks on your feet. But it's not that hard... I found these awesome Reebok flip-flops a few years ago and I had them for three years before they broke!

I found the most comfortable pair of flip flops called crocs. Yes, they are the same brand as the ugly garden or nursing shoe, but there flip flops are awsome. Very cusiony (is that a word?) and soft between the toes.

I had an endo tell me that once upon a time and have been wearing them since and have yet to have a problem.

I'll go one further and say if I'm not wearing sandals then I'm barefoot. I have never had a problem with wearing sandals and have never had a problem being barefoot. I put a pretty big gash in the back of my heel last Summer but it quickly healed. I also do the whole toe ring thing. I say do as you please unless you do have problems with your feet. Next thing they'll be telling us is we can no longer wear shorts.

I'm with the others here...have gone both barefoot & worn flip-flops for years. The first doctor (who diagnosed me in '82) never said I couldn't wear them.

I LOVE Crocs! They are "cushion-y!" The black ones go with everything and are less conspicuous than the brighter colors. That said, I LOVE their array of colors! No other company has been so bold/cool! :D

Isn't it funny how crocs were frowned upon and were ugly as can be but now they are the coolest things in style. I have 2 pair, one being black and the other neon green and I love them. I think I'm about to order my 3rd pair and believe it or not they are BLING crocs. Oh Yeah!!! I'm going to be cool this Summer with the bling on my feet. LMAO!!

LMAO! Totally! I saw the bling ones and they're adorable! You have neon green!? Rock on! :D (that's one of my favorite colors, hehe)
You can also bling out the ones you own now with little gems to clip into the holes. Don't ya just love comfort & fashion all in one?

I have resisted the Croc urge so far. I'm anti-fad. Main reason i didnt' get an iPod. ;)

I'm anti-fad, too (don't own an iPod either ;))....but, when I tried the Crocs on, I really liked the way my feet felt. It's often hard to find good shoes. Besides, if you don't like the Crocs (cause of the "fad" status), you can get less expensive Air-Walks at Payless. :D

So, do you wear "man-sandals" (is that a word?), flip-flops or go barefoot?

OK....I may not be old enough to say this....but 20 years ago, that sentence would have been completely nonsensical! lol

LOL. Man Sandals. I HATE flip flops as I HATE the feeling of the part in between my toes. I'm weird about my feet, i don't like anything touching my toes unless it's ME, or my socks.

:D

Maybe I will break down and try crocs one day.

Wear your flip-flops--your feet could suffocate in closed shoes here in AZ. ;)
Also, I think people are less likely to get things like athlete's foot, toenail fungus, etc. when their feet aren't sweating inside of a shoe.

GAH! PUH-LEEEEEZE!!

I wore my flip flops to the Endo today, nobody said a thing! My feet were checked out and checked for feeling, as usual. As I told the doc anyway, the day I don't feel a grain of sand under my feet, is the day I know something is gone wrong with them!! I have SUPER sensitive feet, can't walk outside barefoot, even on cement, unless it's ultra smooth cement. But around the house, in the summer, I'm always barefoot, or at least have thin a pair of socks on ( always have socks on in winter, thicker ones). I have all wood floors ('cept for the lenolium in the kitchen, laundry room and bathroom), and if I feel the slightest thing under my feet it drives me insane. I also have cold feet! LOL

My endo saw both my flip-flops and my toe rings when she checked my feet last fall, and she never batted an eyelash.
Now the CDE, on the other hand, just about had a STROKE when she saw my flip-flops and told me they had to go.
Whatever! If I had a foot problem, or a feeling problem, maybe, but if I'm not wearing flip-flops I'm barefoot and thats all there is to it!

No sandals, no flip-flops for me. I hate them.
Around the house, I usually wear a pair of socks and outside, some kind of a shoe or boot. I could never go barefoot even when I was a kid.

You are fine with foot jewerly (anklets, toe rings etc). The key is not to have any foot problems. If you have ulcers, red patches off color patches, or a yellow fungus at the tips of your toe nails (I am told this is how most amputations begin). I forget the name of the test but your doctor can test your foot for nueropathy by lightly touching your foot with this needle like device that puts a small amount of pressure on certain 'hot spot' that usually occur in diabetics. It you feel the pressure at all points and your feet look well there is no reason that you can't wear what you want on your feet.

Just because we are diabetic and prone to foot problems, does not mean we should be treated like we already have foot problems.

That's exactly what my doc does at every visit, as well as taking a tuning fork looking thing, banging against something, and placing it on my feet (one at a time, of course) and has me tell when I stop feeling the vibration.

I'm SO happy I'm not the only one who can't stand something between my toes.

Tried toe rings but... same thing, can't stand them.

Socks could hurt your feet too you know! Once ended up a big sore because I was extremely busy, on my feet all day and didn't realize one sock has slipped a bit. Stupid but... my! Was it ever painful.

The key is to check your feet on a reg basis. Barefoot, flip flops, toe rings, socks, shoes, boots, whatever! :)

Yep, check my feet often! :D I also apply lotion to them at least every other day, if not multiple times a day!! (trying to not have the "crusty looking heel effect" LOL)

I can handle the thingie between the toes for flip flops, but that's IT!! Nothing else. Anyone remember those "toe socks" back in the 70's? O.M.G. I couldn' keep even one of those on for 1 second! I thought I was gonna come out of my skin! LOL Toe rings ... nope, no way!!!

I'm like Gangrel too about the touching of my feet! LOL Since they are SO very sensitive ... one MUST have the exact right touch, not to soft - not to hard, or it tickles me or hurts me, depending!

Your endo is giving you advice learned in medical school. In the real world in AZ, flaps are a must. I have been wearing them since shortly after I learned to walk here in CA. I wear them everywhere, just keep an eye on my feet for red spots or broken skin because unfortunately I am a bit of a klutz. Neosporin is my friend

I wear them to the Endo's office too.

I wear a type with molded sole since I have Dupuytren's contracture on my hands and feet. The flip flops are very comfortable for me. Island Slipper Factory, Ltd. (http://www.islandslipper.com) in Hawaii. They als last a long time.

Mich

PS I would think toe rings are a personal choice as long as you are keeping an eye on your feet. Perhaps your endo is concerned about the fact they are not removable in some cases.

I had one pair of toe socks....thought I was going to suffocate whenever I put them on. As for toe rings...love them!!! I always make sure to have the adjustable sized ones, just in case my feet were to swell, making removal difficult if they weren't adjustable.
