I think much of it depends on what meds your on (i'm on metformin 500 mg twice daily only)...alcohol can cause a lowering effect on blood sugar, so be careful and test before, during and after until you know what your blood sugar is going to do...and make sure you have something to help you with a low, should one occur.
For me, I have a glass of red wine at bedtime several times a week with no problem. I have also had Diet 7-up with vodka and rum and not had any trouble---but, I allow myself only ONE drink....and since I never have more than that, one does the trick;) .
Cheers,

I guess it depends on whether you want to live long enough to (a) get old and (b) still be able to function.
Your choice.

I'm type 1 and English so what would I know :D
1st thing to consider is the carbohydrate content. If we're talking lager in pints, you're looking at roughly 15g of carbs per pint. But this can vary a huge amount depending upon what it is. As a lot of the type 2's here low carb then many would consider 4 pints of lager a no-no purely on carb grounds. You also need to consider that alcohol can do weird things to blood glucose. In many people, it causes it to rise at the time and then fall later. It is not until you try (gently!) that you'll know what it does with you. Blood test lots and make sure you are with people you know and trust. Lots of people with diabetes do drink, some to excess. I have done myself. You'll need to accept that (as well as the hangover) you may end up poorly due to the diabetes as well.
On the carb front, a pub measure of white wine will have about 5g of carbs. Red wine will have about 0.5g and the vodka you mentioned has none worth counting. For this reason, any of these are a better choice from a carbs point of view.
If you're going for a curry, it's the food you need to be careful of. Poppadoms, rice, bread, chutneys are all killers. And I haven't been to a curry house yet that didn't chuck in loads of sugar into the curry as well. For this reason, if you do go for this kind of food please accept you'll most likely have a really high blood sugar as a result. Being type 1 I can whack in insulin to cover but you cannot do that. If you do go for a curry, probably best not to go with the lager for the carbs reason alone. The red wine would be better. Yes, I know it tastes rotten with curry but there we are:) Go steady on the bread and rice. Leave the mango chutney alone

Noogsy, I was 42 at diagnosis (43 now). It's my greatest wish to live to be an old woman with all my faculties...I guarantee I won't be boring!;)
In all seriousness, you have to be very careful and diligent in taking care of your diabetes. My mom was diagnosed T2 at 28 after the birth of her 2nd child. She decided to live her life as if she didn't have diabetes, eating whatever she wanted, doing whatever she felt like. At 48, she had a sore come up on her big toe that wouldn't go away. At that point, she started to care about diabetes, but it was way too late. She had her foot amputated, this didn't heal and a few days later had her leg amputated. She had retinopathy so bad that she could no longer drive and she died of renal failure at 54. When I was diagnosed, I knew I didn't want to live first-hand what I had seen.
Yes, it can get very boring/frustrating/aggravating to have to give up some things that we once did without thought of consequences, but I have to tell you, the complications of uncontrolled diabetes are not something you want to experience...or have your family experience.
Not trying to be a big "downer," but having watched what my mom went through, I tend to have a more "anal" attitude about it than some.
Find what works for you and stick with it...even when you'd rather not.
All the best,
Linda

Noogsy, so sorry to hear about your mom...sending thoughts and well-wishes your way. It's so hard to watch a parent go through hard times. I've been without my mom for 12 years this May, and I still miss her. Fortunately, I still have my dad and a sister that i'm close to.
Yes, stress can certainly cause blood sugars to raise, as can any kind of infection/virus. I notice that mine are always lower on the weekends when i'm not at work...of course I move around more than, as i'm chained to the computer at work.
You've got quite a bit of stress on you right now with your mom and your diabetes. That's a lot to handle all at once...the diabetes part does get easier once you get your levels under control.
When your numbers are where they should be, you'll feel so much better. Your vision will probably clear then as well....I noticed blurred vision about a year before my diagnosis and went to the ophthalmologist. Since my blood sugars have been at a good level, I see much better. I've read somewhere that high blood sugars actually can change the shape of some part of your eye (the lens I think) and that this resolves when the blood sugar normalizes.
I hope things go well with your mom. You take care. And do be careful with your feet...the veins there are very small and if your circulation is compromised or you have neuropathy, you can have a sore and not realize it and it may not heal as quickly as it should.

Let's see if I can remember my last drunk: nope, can't remember much at all. Wait, it's coming back to me. A party cruise up the river: a beautiful evening, bald eagles perched in tall spruce, not a wave on the water, a wonderful Canadian evening. Except, some moron brought a bunch of boxed red wine on the boat. Of course none of us touched it until the beer ran out; which it did with about a half an hour left in the 3 hour cruise, the threeee hour cruise!
The next thing I remember is hanging my head out the cab window going down the highway at about 120 klicks. Next memory: talking to God at Don Cherry's Grapevine, except I missed the phone call. I'm sure that nice dirty white floor is still pink. I have no idea how I made it home.
No, stay away from the alcohol!

Firstly ... I'll bee keeping your mom in my thoughts and prayers!!
Welp, I haven't given up my beer!! I dont drink on a daily, or even on a once a week basis. But a couple times a month, when we and the friends all go out for supper, it's us ladies that are the "drinkers" of the bunch, and we'll sit and drink a minimum of 2 pitchers of beer between the 3 of us -often 3 pitchers and even 4 on occasion LOL Yep, we likes our beer!! Yep, I've been rip roarin drunk too!! Altho, I've ALWAYS made SURE I've eaten AND I keep a VERY close watch on my BG!!! That's the key .... watching your BG! Hard Liquors are supposed to be more prone to making one's BG go low or lower. I don't drink Hard Liquor too often, but when I have, I've done well. Again, I just pay close attention to the BG.
If you're accustomed to drinking (as you said you are) and you're not taking any sulfonurea's (I KNOW I spelled that wrong! LOL) such as Glilpizide or Glyburide, you SHOULD be alright. Again, just watch your BG VERY carefully! Should you start to go low, then by all means, EAT something with carbs in it!!

Your best "bang for the buck" as we say here on the correct side of the pond :) , is Gin and Diet Tonic. No carbs, and a good buzz. As far as calories goes, still a good calorie:buzz ratio.

noogs, don't think of it as "dieting" .... It's a "lifestyle" change! It is a change in eating habits, and a good change at that! A change for the better!! It's watching what you eat, and learning how your body reacts to different foods, to improve your health, not neccessarily for "losing weight" (altho, that is a common "side effect". It's a learning experience. One that will benefit YOU!! :) No, it's not always easy to adjust to, and Yes, it will definitely be frustrating at times, but, we are all here for ya, to listen to you when you want to vent, to answer any questions you have and to just give plain ole moral support!!!! You're gonna do just fine! I have faith in you! :D

Hi noogsy! I also am not real good with dieting yet. When we are out on a horse trip it is not as easy to watch our intake as with a full kitchen! As far as the drink goes - I have found Diet Budweiser to be a wonderfull thing! Low in carbs, clean taste, refreshing and rarely seen in singles! A great end to a day on the trail!
