I saw a couple of threads on "HOW LOW CAN MY SUGAR GO" but my questoin is how high can you go before you go into a coma?

It's not really a question of 'how high' but 'how long you remain high'. I think typically you can 'live' for 3 months with bg at 25mmol/l plus before going into a coma - although obviously you're going to feel pretty terrible in the meantime.

Really though, I do think these lines of questioning are dangerous (although I appreciate this is just personal curiosity).

Well I had a stage of having realllly bad high blood sugars, for longer than 3 months I had a few BS that we down in the teens, but mostly they were running high (yes I didnt want to be different from anyone else so I had really bad control) after a while my body got used to being high, not a good thing, LUCKILY i didnt get ketones, trust me it is not a wise idea to let them stay that high.

My higest has been up past 33.3... as that is how high my meter goes before it shows HI... dont let it get that high... I know I have bad contril, but Im sorting it :)

... maybe the question should be : How high and for how long before I have to go see my doc?

Highest I've been was 16 - I stayed between 10 and 16 for about 1 1/2 month while I was suffering from a prolapsed disc. Doc thought it was more important to manage the pain at the time but he kept an eye on BG anyway. Going from 14 to 6 in the same day was quite an unforgetable experience too!

Yeah, I remember once I got a reading of 22.7 (thank you very much Beefeater Restaurants, giving me a regular Coke when I asked for a diet one), so I did a correction bolus of 7u. 2 hours later I was back down to 5.4, but here's the odd thing: I could actually FEEL the insulin working, it was like there were these fingers holding on to the front of my brain and they gradually dragged backwards to the back of my skull. Odd, but strangely satisfying.

I read that at least here in the US, someone did a study and at least 1/4 of the time you order a diet soda in a restaurant, you get a non diet, for one reason or another.

Since I only drink my ice tea unsweetened, that solves that problem nicely :) I don't drink diet soda unless I buy it in bottles or cans, and always get tea when I eat out.

I get highs of 500+when I either incorrectly bolus or forget to bolus and rarely when my site crimped and there was no insulin going in. The key to me figuring it out is .......If I have to pee more than once in a span of 4 or more hours I check the BS. If it is not high then I recall what I drank or make a mental note that next time I go do I have that lovely burning sensation for the urinary track infection (which is exceedingly common in diabetics.....had them always as a small kid if only they knew then)

I have been high 500s for three four days at a time. In the 600s one night after a new years eve party. I felt perfectly fine except for blured vision. When I got control of my BS I felt like **** for about two weeks as my body adjusted to the lower numbers. I have absolutely no symptoms when I'm high. I wish blood gushed from my ears when I'm high. But instead, it was just killing me silently up untill I got a grip on diet, exercise and best of all...... a new doctor.

... want to be SURE you're getting a diet soda? Do as I do : when you order, mention you are diabetic and if you get a reg soda by mistake, you could end up in a diabetic coma right in the middle of their restaurant. Works every time :) :) :)

I left my insulin at home today so I guess I might soon find out as I am really very hungry and about to eat my lunch.

Or at least the tomato soup. I might skip the sandwich.

Well maybe im different but I never drink regular soda (get my hi sugar levels else where). So when im at a restaurant and they sit a regular soda down I can tell its regular with the first sip. I hate regular soda it leaves a nasty aftertaste.

I had a 32 once (Thankfully only once) I don't know how high I can go and have no intention of finding out!!! However, I think it is always a reflection on my control in general to see how long it takes me to be symptomatic when I am high. Generally I start feeling ill at 13, but at times when I have been running slightly higer for a few days, I can go to 20 before I feel thirsty.

I ate my tomato soup and my sandwich (actually a Ham & Cheese baguette).

So far I feel normal. A little bit stressed out but otherwise normal.

Good luck Fishy. Doesn’t sound like allot of starch so you should be fine.

I wish there was some kind of test strip to use to find out if things contain sugar, like when you order a diet pop and think you got a regular. There should be some strip you can dunk in the pop and it should be able to change color or something based on the sugar / no sugar result. Just a thought.

I've heard you can use the urine sugar test strips to ck sodas.

My diagnostic b/s was in the upper 400's, and I was miserable and very ill. I occasionally hit in the 200's w/o feeling ill.

hope you don,t mind me jumping in here but i,ve had a problem with being sold ordinary coke instead of diet many times..i now use the clinistix to test it when i,m out.In the UK,you can buy them from Boots, they cost about £3 and they,re well worth it.
