View Full Version : My daughter was just diagnosed
My daughter, Rebecka was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She is almost 9 and is just finnishin second grade. She is doing so good and immediately started doing her bloodsugar testing her self. We are doing great with the carb counting and the food. We do already have a pretty healthy lifestyle when it comes to food. But, I am looking for good "treats". Our nurse told me that it is OK for her to have i.e icecream if I just give her a shot first. But I would like to get more ideas about good healthier treats that she would like. We are from Sweden and are here in the US for a three year contract. We will be going back to Sweden in the summer of 2008.
Have a great day!

I have sugar free jellos and puddings, and I freeze some low caeb yogurts until they are slushie, and eat it like icecream. Usually the only salty snacks I have are pork rinds or nuts. My granddaughter loves those little salad cucumbers, cold and unpeeled, eats them like she would an apple, she also likes the baby carrots and strips of green pepper. When I am doing really good with my numbers, I have a small soft serve icecream from Dairy Queen, I bolus for it, and it is a rare treat when the rest of the family is getting icecream. I'm sorry she has to do this, but especially if she is active, she can have many more things for snacks than I can. Welcome to the forum. :)

Hi Sari,
I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's diagnosis, and glad to hear how well she is doing.
One of my favourite diabetes books is by a Swedish doctor -- it's Type 1 Diabetes, a guide for children, adolescents, young adults -- and their caregivers, by Ragnar Hanas. It sounds like you have a really excellent system of diabetes care there.
Your daughter can have "normal" snacks like ice cream -- and in fact if there's any worry about her going low at night (say after an especially active day) ice cream can be a good bedtime snack because the fat in it keeps it "working" for a little longer than some foods. Chips, too. For healthier alternatives, frozen yogurt and baked crisps like "crispy minis" or popcorn have less fat (and popcorn is pretty low-carb too).
It's good to also build up a repertoire of low or no-carb snacks that she can have when she feels like munching but doesn't want another extra shot. Celery and peanut butter or cream cheese, raw veggies and dip, scrambled eggs or an omelette are all basically "free." Strawberries, surprisingly, have so much fiber that 1 cup is only 10 carbs. Same with sunflower seeds or pistachios.
Good luck with it all -- you'll spend a lot of time peering at the labels in the grocery stores at first, and you'll discover the foods that work best for you.

I'm sure that was tough news to take :( , but it sounds like she is doing really well so far :)...
My advice to you would be to keep learning all you can about her condition. The more you know, the better :top:... Joining this forum is a great way to learn a lot... and get advice and answers to your questions. So don't be shy, jump right in and post :)
Hope we'll be seeing you around :burnout:.

Hi Sari,
Welcome.
thanks for the tip! I bought them and she loves them! //Sari
Hi Holly!
Thanks for all your tips. I will definately look for the book by Ragnar Hanas. Sweden has acctually one of the highest amount of Type 1 diabetics. I will make a shelf for her with the low carb snacks that she can munch on whenever she feels like it. I´m starting to get more and more ideas as time goes. thanks again! Sari
