I was just curious as to how many needles everybody was taking before they started on the pump???? I take 5/day but was thinking maybe evryone here was on something crazy like 10 or something before. Thanks everyone and look forward to hearing from you as always.

I take about 4 each day, an injection of Humalog at each meal and an injection of NPH at bedtime.

I'm not on a pump, but currently 6 shots plus an average of 7 blood sugar tests.

Like lgvincent, I injected Humalog before each meal plus a shot of NPH at bedtime. In addition, there'd often be 2 hour post meal corrections.

This will sway the average in your survey, but i was only on one shot a day!! Ok, i'll explain. I was on an inhaled insulin trial. Took one shot of ultralente at night, then inhaled my fast acting before each meal. I wasn't that fond of the inhaled insulin and i HATED the ultralente, so i actually switched to 2 shots of NPH about a month before going on the pump, so i guess i was really on 2 shots a day. I think if i were still on shots, it would be one shot of Lantus plus humalog or novolog before each meal or snack and any time i had a correction to make....Makes me happy to be on a pump!

Hi Court,
Prior to pumping, I was on 4 to 6 shots per day, with a sliding scale. I took approx. 28 units of Ultralente in the morning (forgot how much in the evening) and the rest of the shots were right before meals (Regular). My shots of Regular were on a sliding scale, depending on what my blood sugar was...(i.e. 6 units for a blood sugar of 130-150, 10 units if over 200...etc.) I've been on pump therapy for 8 years, so I've forgotten some about the dosages...lol :D
I know that I took 2 shots in the morning (the doctors did not want me to mix the Regular and Ultralente), a shot at lunch (if my blood sugar required one) and another 2 shots in the evening (seperately) of Ultralente and Regular.

4 shots/day total here.
NovoRapid three times a day (before each meal - rarely corrected or snacked) and NPH at about 10 pm at night. I still sometimes find myself going for my Innovo pen to shoot up the NPH at bedtime

I was on 4-6 shots per day before starting on the pump. I did corrections if needed so that is why I say 4 to 6. I am now a two and a half year pump user and never plan on going back.

I'm not currently on a pump, but planning on one. At the moment I'm on 4 injections, 3 novorapid and Lantus before bed

I got my pump in '96.......some of the newer insulins were not available then.
I was on 8 to 10 shots of regular U-100, one of those in the am and one in the pm were mixed with NPH.
I was greatful and relieved to get the pump.
Take care all,
Liz

8 to 10 shots of Regular PER DAY????
We were talking about overlapping insulin in the Type One forum. Given the fact that R lasts about 6 to 8 hours, you were doing lots of overlapping before you started pumping!! Did you take very small doses of NPH as a result?

Jack was taking 8 shots a day of NPH and Regular. When he was changed to Lantus and Novolog he went down to 4. He used a Medijector tho, and not needles so it wasn't quite so traumatic for him to take multiple shots.
