My daughter and I both started pumping on Monday

I am checking her every hour at night right now, becuase her ISF is 400 and she is so sensitive to insulin...worried about the sensitivity to Novolog as a basal.

Anyway, I am doing well considering my stress is thru the roof with getting her basals figured out, so my question is can I even begin to figure out my own basals if I am waking up every hour at night? Surely that must have a huge effect on my BS's. Any thoughts on this?

Actually, its the perfect opportunity to figure out your own nighttime basal rates. Eat an early, and predictable dinner (low fat, lower carb, and known amount of carbs). Beginning 6-8 hours after your dinner/dinner bolus, (assuming you have not bolused for any reason after dinner), start testing yourself each hour. Repeat this for a few days, and you'll be able to identify trends in your basals that need adjustment. Make the changes in your basals with your doc/educator, then rinse and repeat until you have steady numbers all night long.

i started pumping a little over a week ago. I am also checking through the night since i keep on going low overnight. I am down to 05 units at night now. I do think it affects my day basal, but right now i am just trying to get the nights right. I know from experience that lack of sleep makes my sugars unpredictable.

You could try testing your night basals every 2 hours, but staggered on different nights. So, say on the first night you set an alarm to wake yourself at 2am and also at 6am. The next night you stagger 2 hours and test at 12am and 4am. Try to start the tests with stable bg values on both nights. You can test your daughter at the same times that you do your tests. You may have to repeat them as you adjust your basal pattern. The problem with waking every 2 hours is that it interferes with your normal sleep pattern and any possible Dawn Phenomena that you should take into consideration.

lack of sleep is a tough one. My first daughter was colickey (sp) the first year. The stress that put on me made my BS hard to lower. My basal rates skyrocketed. Try to get some sleep use your time awake to adjust your basals too Good Luck and hang in there.
