Hi!
I'm a Type 2, about to start on Metformin after 2 years of non-medicated (not really good) control. I just finished my nutrition education yesterday and feel ready to make this work. My last A1c was 6.7, so I've got some work to do.
Anyway, looking forward to learning from everyone here!

Hi Anita, welcome! I'm sure you'll find lots of great advice here. You're A1C, while a little elevated, is by no means horrible...my first A1C at diagnosis was 9.6 and there've been some here even higher. Good news is you know what you're dealing with and how to start dealing with it.
Hopefully, you were given a monitor and told to test. Testing is critical to maintaining good control. Especially test 2 hrs after the first bite of your meal...this way, you'll see how different foods affect your blood sugar and can make the best choices. This was the greatest advice I was given (and it came from a forum member, not my doctor!). I'd suggest you keep a food journal and put down what you eat and what your blood sugar was afterwards. I did this for a couple of months, until I had things under good control. I test 4-5 times a day, more if I get unexpected results.
Metformin will take around 3 weeks to reach optimal levels, so don't be discouraged if you don't see lower levels immediately, though I did notice improvement even the first week.
There's a great book i'd recommend for any newly-diagnosed diabetic, "Type 2 Diabetes, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker...it's well-written, easy to understand and full of good advice.
Hang in there! Things get easier as time goes by. The most important thing is to do all you can to have as normal levels as you can, this will help you avoid long-term complications.
Again, Welcome!
Linda
