I'm 86 years old and have been diagnosed with Type 11 for about five years. I've been given several drugs in an attempt to lower the BS - Glyburide, Amaryl, Prandin, Januvia, Avandia and Metformin. They all worked about the same. I was taken off Avandia for obvious reasons and put on a combination of Januvia and Metformin about 5 weeks ago. The Metformin made me so nauseaus the doctor today changed me back to Amaryl. He also said a warning had just been issued about the effect Metformin has on the heart.
For a new member I sure have talked a lot. I'm glad to find this forum.

Hi Marcia, what kind of numbers do you have? Have you considered insulin?
Nothing really changed for me until I started using it. We all talk a lot, so you fit right in. :)

Hi Marcia, welcome to DF!!Ask all the questions you think you need to ask!! It's a rare moment that someone doesn't have an answer!

I personally think it was a very good decison to take you off of the Avandia. I've NEVER heard of any serious problems with Metformin tho. Metformin is one of the very first meds for T2 Diabetics .... from WAY back when!!! I don't know the exact date, but it's been around for a LONG time!! I personally wouldn't worry about it UNLESS, you had some bad reaction to it in one way or another!

Penny,
Varies between 120 up to 210. Because of my age doctor isn"t too concerned ( after all, I wont be around much longer anyway. lol ) Tho he has suggested insulin may be next. My main problem is my weight. I weigh 110 and cant find a way to gain. Most foods that put on weight are taboo. Thanks for caring.
