It is ++ve microalbumin when tested yesterday.The same vlue was about 6 years before.During this period when ever tested it never found -ve.My cretinine clearence is 83(24 hrs collected urine).Few particles of Protein were found.I did not care.But what should I do now?

!-Stop taking mutton,chicken fish etc.

2-Dairy products like milk.yogurt also contain protein.
3-- My age is about 62,I do need protein too.Which protein is less harmful for me?

Hi Rustam, It's not so much which protein, but how much at any one sitting. Something like 100 to 150 gram limit per meal should help. This is to help limit kidney damage when your glucose and blood pressure are elevated. Keeping bg and bp levels low will do more than limiting protein intake, but you do what you can where you can.

That seems high, the RDA is 0 .75gm protein per 1kg of bodyweight per day(more if you're very active, young etc) To meet protein allowance for a 70kg person, 52.5gm of protein is needed.BBC - Health - Healthy living - Protein (http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/healthy_living/fitness/energy_protein.shtml)
You would get 40gm from a 150gm piece of lean meat or poultry so perhaps thats where your figure comes from. Dieticians say most of us eat far too much.

The protein in roast lamb is 33gm per 100gm
Chicken breast 30gm per 100gm
fish 20-30gm/100gm
milkskimmed 3.5gm/100gm
yoghurt about 14gm/100gm
Egg 7gm/50-60gm egg
Egg yolk 3gm/50-60gm egg
My book doesn't have whites but it must be about 4gm per egg

Hi Rustam, how much you can have depends on your condition. Not knowing your Micro Albumin, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol levels it would be careless to say you can have as much as you want. When I was advised in regards to meal planning 4 oz. or 113 grams of lean meat was the recommendation to avoid kidney damage. They give everyone the same amount of meat regardless of age, size, sex, or activity levels.


Helen, when Dietitians talk about how much you need they are talking sustenance living. Which is great information when your trying to loose weight while staying healthy. Spent too many years doing that sustenance living when I was poor. :eek: The site you linked to says, "However, they also state there's no advantage - both in terms of performance or muscle size - to taking more than 2g of protein per kg/d, providing carbohydrate needs are met." The same sites recommendation, under Carbohydrates, says I should also be eating 500+ grams of carbohydrates a day. On average I try to limit carbs around 150 to 200 a day.

Oh dear, I hate getting into arguments:(

I agree that the RDA is the minimum for healthy living. I am not trying to lose weight and personally probably eat slightly more than the RDA for protein, but I exercise a lot
I don't agree that it is a 'sustenance diet'. By judicious choice of proteins you can eat very well. I concede that might be more difficult if you cut carbohydrates significantly although I don't eat a lot more than you do.
The 113gm of lean meat you were advised would have around 33gm protein leaving 20gm of protein (for a 70kg non active person) for the other meals.

0 .75-0.85 protein per kg for normal non athletic adults is widely used. This figure is also recommended for people with the early stages of diabetic kidney diseases

Rustam : If you can it would be best to seek the advice of a dietician so that you can devise a balanced diet for your own needs that includes all the necessary elements.

I have been seeing a nephrologist for 12 years now, actually two different doctors, my first one retired.
They both stressed to me that importance of control blood pressures and blood glucose...diet has never been mentioned.
I have chronic renal insuffiency with a creatinine clearance of 1.5...but the good thing is that it has been steady (with the exception of having MRI's that require contrast)
I asked at one point if I would eventually have to go on dialysis anyway regardless of maintaining my levels. and the doctor told me no and that I could remain at a safe level as long as I controlled BP and BG.

(I have protein and blood in my urine, but only trace levels now)
