Yeah i do, but i just drink for the taste rather than getting drunk also whatch that your BG don't go too low.
So the whole idea of if you were to have a drink then have somthing to eat too as this will bolster you BG level rather going too low. ;) :T

I don't - I quit altogether right after dx. I'm barely smart enough to count carbs, figure ratios, calculate a dual wave bolus, grok the Glycemic Index, etc. I'd have a **** of a time after a drink or two...
Joe
I am drinking right now...
If you search for alcohol I'm sure you'll come up with lots of discussions about what "fun" alcohol and diabetes can be...

Because of the heart problem, my cardiologist recommended to have one glass of red wine every day. Although it is hard to have even one glass a week (because of travel) I claim that I am a couple of years ahead of myself. Being diabetic doesn't mean that you have to give up everything!
Dx'd in Dec. 1983, on insulin for 1 year. Never felt better! A1c 5. What more can one ask for!

Yes I drink but I watch my blood sugars because they go either low or high. I wouldn't want to give up having a few here and there. :D

Of course. Having diabetes has nothing to do with my ability to drink and it's perfectly ok for people with diabetes to drink - provided you know what you're doing.
My drinks of choice are absinthe and Eastern European lagers.

It takes a few trial and errors. You don't have to know straight away how you react to all kinds of alcohol. Just experiment with one favourite at first. It's really not so difficult, but try to err on the high side initially.

Mmmmmmm, booze...........
sorry, what was the question?

Yup. You need to be aware of the carb content of certain drinks, but yes you can drink alcohol. If you cannot handle your drink, keep in mind that you still need enough sense to be able to blood test and sort yourself out if required....
Following on from the 'is type 1 a disability' thread and lots of people saying that type 1 has never stopped them doing anything, I can happily say that it stops me getting absolutely blind drunk in the company of complete strangers as I like the idea of waking up again :D But perhaps that is no bad thing...

I drink alcohol, I don't get blind drunk anymore, but thats a good thing.
I have to watch that my blood sugars don't go too low as alcohol tends to drop me quite significantly. i drink a couple of alcopops or regular coke, to prevent any lows.

I'm trying to shed a few pounds as well as control my BG, so I've reduced myself to about 1 vodka gimlet a week and perhaps one glass of red wine. *checks watch, has to be 5pm somewhere*

I have a glass of white zin or a low-carb frozen margaretta almost every night after my evening walk. It helps me to relax!

Do I drink? After a day with my crappy job, absolutely. But, I don't drink beer which requires insulin. I drink rum and diet coke, (which, for ME, want to stress that) as it has no effect on my blood sugar. Rum has calories, but no carbs...
Drinking beer is always risky for me, as after a couple I might forget to take insulin for the drink. With rum and diet coke, I don't have to worry about it. And no, I don't go low, ever from drinking a couple..just me however....you might be different.
Drinking coffee, believe it or not, is more risky for me than alcohol, as it sometimes raises my sugars, yet other times does not. I told this to my doc and dietitian and they looked at me like I had a third eye. Black coffee, too.
Bottom line, if you want to drink, have rum or rye with a diet coke. Works for me.

I drink probably more often than I should. I catch **** from everybody about it. (That, and I tend to want to smoke when I drink :smokin: )
I always stay away from sugary drinks. Usually I drink low carb beer or a rum and diet.

I drink about 2 beers about every night, usually Belgium (Delerium or Duvel) or American Pale Ales. The only thing I worry about is the price.

Here is a link listing carb contents of various drinks:
Alcohol Carbohydrates in alcohol what is the carbohydrate content of alcohol carbs (http://www.weightlossforall.com/carbohydrates-alcohol.htm)
All I know is that rum (and diet coke) has ZERO effect on my sugars.
That's for ME however, maybe YOU might go low so be careful until you know for sure.

Also remember to make sure at least one person you're with knows that when you go REALLY hypo you might act drunk.

Not a perfect analogy, but worth posting just to rile you up...
"The x-ray showed just a little spot on my lung, but I still have 2 or 3 cigarettes a day. You bet I do,with all the stress I have after seeing the x-ray, I need to relax!"
On a directly related note:
A 20 yr old T1 just died in my hometown. He was at a party, went low, picked a fight, then stomped off. They found his body about 5 days later in a canal.
To each his own, as we all know. Alcohol consumption is just part of the risk management game we play. Just don't pretend there is no risk.

I drink pretty regurlarly (NOT on a daily basis), but I rarely drink in excess, moderation is key!
And beside's I've been there, done that; I was a very heavy drinker in my last 2 years of highschool (including my first year as a type 1 diabetic) and getting wasted/crunked gets old really fast.
Drinking too much is bad for your health and body anyway... smoking cannabis (and getting high) is actually a much safer alternative to getting crunk! And No, i'm Not encouraging the use of marijuana, but I am canadian, and no matter who you talk to, marijuana IS a part of canadian culture!

Very debateable. I've nothing against people smoking weed but my own personal experiences with it mean I don't touch the stuff anymore. Neither drug is particularly safe, although I would concede that people who are stoned are less likely to commit crimes under the influence than people who are drunk.
