Sweets are killing me. How do you get rid of a sweet tooth. I know some of you probably don't crave sweets, but I can't resist.

I am not one that is motivated by chocolate at all, I have maybe one day out of a whole month that I want it. When I spoke to my Nurse on the phone, she told me that while I won't want it that day, to go get it and have it on hand so when I do I am not tempted to get into trouble.

She told me to go to the store, WalMart and Kroger in my case.... and they have some great Sugarfree Chocolates there. I found Russell Stovers has some awesome sugarfree chocolates. Also, Reeces, Dove, York Peppermint Patties. and a few others are great. Andes Mints, my favorites, are good too.

I am more into hard candies and things like that and Jolly Ranchers come sugarfree as well. Those are good.

Baby Ruth? YUCK...... those are horrible. EWWWWW!!!

I LOVE ice cream, and Breyer's has some awesome sugarfree Vanilla Ice Cream, and the Rocky Road is great too.

I only eat sweets like I said, maybe once or twice a month, I just don't like sweets much, so I am lucky. But I have been giving a lot of things a taste test to make sure when I DO want it, I have options. And my kids are loving the sugarfree ice cream as well. ;)

I am pretty new to all of this so I don't have a LOT of help to offer, all I can do is tell you what I have tried. I was just diagnosed a little over a month ago, so my whole world is one big experiment right now.

As far as ice cream goes, is low carb a good alternative? I hear a lot of people say carbs can effect your blood sugar as much as sugar.

Yes low carb is the way to go. Carbs definately raise your blood sugar so be careful with anything that says sugar free, only eat them in moderation because they do contain carbs. But they are yummy!! Enjoy!! :D

I hate the low carb ice creams... they no sugar added is much better.

the low carb tastes like cardboard to me, and has a flour-y taste to it.


Blue Bunny, No sugar added double strawberry, and bunny tracks is awesome.... the cherry flavor is ok, i can eat it, but i like the others better. the banana split i havnt tried yet.

You must have high Blood Glucose and feel like ****. :( I like you love sweet things and cannot stay away. what you can do is exercise and work it off, Otherwise you have to say no.

It's hard to loose that "sweet tooth." However, I have found that if I eat a low carb diet, my cravings for sweets diminishes significantly. It takes a good couple of weeks of really minimizing carbs, but you'll notice a difference. I found this out when I was on the S. Beach diet a few years back, before my diagnosis.

I also keep a bag of Dark Chocolate Dove candy in my freezer...when I have a chocolate urge, I get a couple and let them slowly dissolve in my mouth...this really takes care of my craving, with minimal effect on my blood sugar. Also, s/f pudding is a great alternative and comes in many flavors.

As for ice cream, I like the Breyer's Carb Smart Chocolate or Strawberry. I have had regular ice cream, but the Breyer's has less effect on my blood sugar, AND I can have a bigger portion, so it's win-win in my book.

I have a huge sweet tooth as well, for me the no sugar added sweets has worked very well. My wife keeps a bag of no sugar added Werthers in the pantry so I have a few of those when the mood strikes. Also, here in Canada we have a chain of chocolate stores called Laura Secord, they have by far the best no sugar added chocolate bars I have ever tasted. They have a store in pretty much every mall so I just pop down there for a chocolate bar when that craving hits.

To tell you the truth, when my glucose gets high, I really don't feel any different. Is that unusual? I also hear dark chocolate is good for blood pressure.

If you are newly diagnosed, your body may have gotten used to the higher levels and consider that your normal....I know that now that my blood sugars are usually with a good range, if I do occasionally go high (over 150), I feel really tired/sleepy and get a headache.

As for the benefits of dark chocolate, i've read of several benefits, but i've always enjoyed dark chocolate for the taste. I think it is probably better for you than milk chocolate though. I don't see that it has helped my blood pressure, as I will be starting a new BP medication soon.

One other thing I wanted to mention...for me, thinking I CAN'T have something only makes me want it more. I've learned to plan for my treats...i'll make sure hubby is around to split something with me and that we're getting a lot of exercise on the day I decide to have something. I usually eat anything with more carbs earlier in the day, as i'm less active in the evenings. Counter your "treats" with exercise and good food and you shouldn't have a lot of problems. I've found I enjoy 1-2 bites of something, just as much as I used to enjoy a whole piece. I'll have a grilled chicken salad with vinaigarette dressing and then a couple bits of cheesecake or a piece or two of chocolate. Don't fixate on all that you can't have, find things that make you feel satisfied that have only minimal effects on your blood sugar.

Hang in there, things will get better.

Sugar-free candies. Especially Werther's butterscotch drops.
Crystal light over ice. Crystal light slushies (ice in blender)
Vlasek No Sugar Added bread and butter pickles (I keep a jar in the fridge.)
No Sugar added ice cream. Sometimes with sugar free jam,
Wasa Cracker with peanut butter & sugar free jam.
A cold Starbucks canned double shot light (Splenda, 6 gm carbs)
