Since I'm so tired of haivng eggs for breakfast I had cereal this morning. I ate shredded wheat with no added fruit and 2% milk. I ate the cereal then poured the remaining milk out since I know the lactose will cause my BG to go up. However, I really don't understand why it went up from 140 to 255 2 hrs after I ate. Before I ate I took 16 units of Apidra insulin. I've tried having oatmeal as well and it has the same effect on my BGs. Help? What is a good breakfast alternative to eggs ALL the time?

I know what you mean about eggs...somethings I think if I have to look at one more, i'll DIE!!!!!!!!!

I also enjoy the S. Beach High Protein Cereal Bars....peanut butter or Cinnamon raisin are my faves. You should try them.

Recently, i've tried the Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal at the recommendation of one of the docs I work for...it's loaded with fiber, tasty,and 3/4 cup with skim milk doesn't cause a great rise in my blood sugar. If you go to Kashi.com, they have a $2.00 printable coupon.

Another option is to eat a non-breakfast type meal....meat/cheese rollups, hot dog, hamburger patty, whatever you eat for another meal that doesn't cause significant rise....I do this a lot (hubby cringes and goes back to his eggs:T ).

The cereal bars from Kashi sound good but I've wondered how they'd affect my numbers. I like that thought though as I'm usually in a hurry and I could grab one on the way out the door. I do love my rollups using lettuce so that's another thought as well. Thanks for the suggestions and I'll experiment

I've had the Kashi cereal bars as well, but they do have a few more carbs than S. Beach Bars...though they have lots of fiber too.

One thing I have noticed though, when I have something with more carbs such as cereal, i'm hungry sooner than with eggs. I try not to snack between meals, so this is an issue for me, finding something that will last.

I try to have eggs 3 days of the week and something else the rest of the time.

Also, if you like to drink your breakfast, Walmart/Sam's have AdvantEdge Carb control shakes in a variety of flavors (choc. vanilla, s/berry, mocha, choc. fudge) that have 100 calories, 4 total carbs for an 11 oz drink. They are good and filling and don't have to be refrigerated (though they are better cold).

Cereal is made from grain which is ... well ... sugar. It does the same to me. I attack these high post prandials by bolusing early and eating smaller portions. Maybe try mixing some protein/fat in with it such as cheese.

My dietitian told me to stay under 180 cabs a day. I actually try to stay under 40 carbs per meal. I do the egg thing with some low carb toast (6 carb/slice) or 1 C Hash Browns. Sometimes I have 1/4 cup (dry) of steel cut oats mixed with 1/4 C. oat bran, topped with Calorie Countdown (3 Carbs/cup) "milk" (total 35 carbs). I sometimes have 1 C. All Bran (26 Carbs) or 1 C. Special K "Protein Plus" (12 Carbs), each topped with Calorie Countdown. This morning I made Waffles from a blend of Carbquik and Bisquik (40 carb.). Not great but passable enough to satisfy the occasional craving. My BG was 107 before and 128 two hours after. Entirely acceptable in my book. I do do the vinegar thing when I'm pushing my carb limit.

I like Sara Lee's "heart healthy multi-grain" bread. It has 13 carbs per slice. Sometimes I add natural peanut butter (5 carbs) and smucker's sugar free strawberry jelly (5 carbs). I also like the morning star veggie sausage links...I think they are 3 carbs for 2 links. They are low in fat and have a lot of protein.

If there is a Trader Joe's near you count your blessing. They have a variety of healthy cereals with low carbs and high fibers. Many of them are by Kashi. That's all I eat and no problems with high BS afterwards (usually around 120 post prandial). In fact I reduce the bolus for breakfast. It works for me!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I can't wait to try some of these. One question though.....What do you mean you "do the vinegar thing"?

Does anyone drink Boost Glucose Control or Blue Bunny Sweet Freedom? They taste pretty good if you like to drink your breakfast.

Carnation has a sugar free instant breakfast that is pretty good. You have to mix it with milk. I saw that original Special K cereal has 22 g of carbs which is lower than most. Also I just found peach sugar free jelly and I love it much better than apricot.

Who says you have to eat traditional breakfast foods for breakfast? Eat left overs from dinner the night before. Eat a salad. Eat soup, a vegetable tray, grilled cheese, turkey sandwiches. I can't remember the last time a I actually ate breakfast food for breakfast. Today I had grilled vegetables on pasta. Yesterday, I ate peanut butter on celery and some cottage cheese. Both mornings I had v8 and diet coke to drink.

Breakfast foods are traditionally high carb and high fat and if you're tired of them, just don't eat them. What we usually eat for lunch or dinner is healthier then most breakfast foods anyway.
