24 years old T1 Diabetic for 22 years, decent control, although no matter what I do I can't seem to get my A1C under 7.0%, so I am looking into obtaining a pump.
Regardless, I am currently on Lantus and Humalog. I inject Lantus once daily at 5PM 35 units. More often than not from 6PM until approx. 9PM my mood and enbergy level is awful. I test frequently to ensure it is not BG related and have on occassion also tested for ketones just in case the Lantus wasn't acting quick enough. No matter what I do I can't seem to escape these mood swings until 9 PM or so, then I am energetic and feel fine.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I almost always try to crash for half an hour when I get home from work. If I don't, I am ugly all evening. Exercise is good too.

Do some searches on here for lantus and depression. Whilst I know of no concrete 100% proof that there is a link, there have certainly been a few folks on here who have said that Lantus did not suit them in terms of mood. In those cases, their mood improved a great deal when they switched to a different insulin. I'm not suggesting you change insulin (especially on reading a few anecdotes on the Internet) but you may find it of interest.

Personally, I am still on Lantus but I was injecting way too much of the stuff. I felt lousy due to constant highs and lows (it was essentially the ratio of Lantus to bolus insulin that I had round the wrong way). I also used to be on 35 units per night. Now I'm on 18 of Lantus. I feel a lot better, though this is to be expected due to the fact that my control is now very good where it was awful. I feel a lot happier, though I have absolutely no idea whether this is due to the better control or to the reduction in Lantus intake.

I did consider swapping to Levemir, but to be honest I'm very happy with my control at present and mentally I feel a million dollars so I'm working on the cliche about broken things and the pointless nature of repairing them.

Is your overall control good? Large swings in BG give lots of people mood swings (me included!). If you haven't done so, testing your basal rates via a fast is a useful excercise IMO; again searching on here can give you details and it will help to show you if the Lantus is causing a bit of a dip which it shouldn't do. Its job is to keep your BG level when no other food or insulin is involved.

I was taking Lantus & Humalog before I was prescribed the pump. I didn't do well with the injections. I would forget and never take them at the same time, sometimes forget completely to do it. I had trouble with lows & highs as well.

The pump has been a life changer for me. I highly recommend it if you have the option to switch.

I haven't experienced any mood swings related to the insulin or BS in general. Even with my BS under better control (my last A1C was 7), I am still almost always tired and lethargic. Especially if I am running even a little high. If I have a terrible swing in a day from high to low or low to high, forget it! I'm useless for the rest of the day.

I hope this improves as I work on bringing my A1C down.

Everyone is so different!:) I definately recommend pump therepy too, btw. Before pumping, I was also on Lantus and I didn't notice any mood swings or anything. (thank goodness) And I think that it's kinda funny that my first A1C (on needles) was 6.1 and my last A1C (on pump) was also 6.1! I keep hoping to get an A1C in the 5's, but I guess I'm just not disciplined enough food wise to get there yet.
