Today i was reading one of last years issues of Shape magazine and came across an article about Halle Berry. To my surprise, i found out that gorgeous Halle is T1 and was diagnosed in '89.
I decided to look Halle up on line and found one of many articles about her and her diabetes:
Health 24 - Diabetes, Real life story (http://www.health24.com/medical/Condition_centres/777-792-808-1536,16928.asp)
She's drop dead gorgeous, super fit, great skin and hair, very talented and T1...wow she's my new super hero! :D lol.

Yes, so there is hope after all. I know of a ballerina who is a type 1 and i find it incredible to see that she do ballet and diabetes as well and we naturally clicked. But it comes down to hard physical work and a full time looking for lows. So as i'm typing out this story she's at the barre and a small table with jelly beans and a glucose meter.
She said that i should take up ballet and if the ballet Mistress sees me then i'm a dead duck as in swan lake ducks in the lake but then i get to enjoy her dancing and she is a joy to see.
I would like to dance but then not in the professional level as i cannot kick my feet past my hip. So yeah not good and she would let me in and do some stretching of the tendons but i need a phisio and she would laugh. What i can do is point my toe and she said i have a strong ankle that can support an en point shoe and many dancers don't :(
Anyway she said that i could play the king in swan lake in act one & three if there ever was lol. It's tempting but i dunno??
Peter... :D

She's ultrafine but not ultrafine's :T
I like to hear of famous people speaking out about their Diabetes - it doesn't happen often! I can see why too - in such a competitive job you could be turned down simply for the fact you may have some special needs - like needing to set your own break if you're low regardless of what the director wants, etc.
Anyhoo, I'm impressed by Halle's willingness to speak out about it, you go gal!
I also recently learnt that Elvis Presley & Elizabeth Taylor had/have diabetes (never said what type but I think T2s). I already knew about Mary Tyler Moore - and it sounds like she's another one who does great things for D's all over the world. I guess there must be thousands of D's out there, and some of us have to be famous people who have the power to spread the word (or at least, just be there and famously have diabetes so that other people have a chance to think it's ok!)
There are a few lists of well known diabetics on the net,if you'd like to see them, Google 'Famous Diabetics'

If I was in the movie business I would much prefer someone with needs for their health rather than... trying to cope with capricious whims of self centered movie stars :D
True! Celebrities don't speak out much about health issues they may face in their personal life. I think it just makes them more human, more real. Closer to us! :) :) :)

Agggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!
"Halle admits that her favourite foods are butter pecan ice cream and salt and vinegar potato chips – neither of which she can eat often or in more than a minute quantity without serious health consequences.
"
THIS kind of stuff ticks me off. The last time I ate a DQ Blizzard (peanut butter cup, yum!) it was hardly a "minute" quanitity, and I didn't slip into a coma, have a seizure, break out in hives, or have any other type of "serious health consequences".
Sigh......

Absolutely! I'm with you there!!

Absolutely (again!). It probably doesn't mean a lot to the average person but it's great for us, especially for people who will be diagnosed in the future. We hear far too much negative stuff about D. Always good to have a positive role model :)

She definitely is a big diabetes advocate here in the US. I have always admired her.

If I eat large quantities of ice cream or potatoe chips I either run really high; take too much insulin up front which makes me run low then high over the next few hours; or running about 200 for a few hours. Everyone is different!

I have no doubt that some people can have a hard time eating "treats" and some of us are lucky enough to do fairly well with it.
However, in MY opinon, a reading of 200 is NOT a severe health consequence. It is simply an abberation, a fluke, a single bad reading.
If a person runs 200 for many weeks in a row, THEN I would consider it something severe.
Whenever i get a high reading, I simply just try to figure out why I got it.... if I know, great, if not, I just do my correction dose anyway and forget about it.
If it's a constant thing, then I dive into adjusting ratios, rates, etc. But a single, or a few high readings mean nothing to me.......

Too right Popper!!, As they're are fit people have the ability to work off those highs and i have seen and myself do it.
I have gulped down a cake with high carbs!! no bolus!!! and get on my bike and go **** for lether for 30Km (Thats your 23miles i think) and i would arrive after that intence workout with a perfect 5.5 / 99 and no bolus!!! But you must be fit to do that and also please take some jubes or something with you that will get you out of that low!!! ;)

Since she is in hollywood, and she is loaded, she can probably switch to the pump to enjoy her treats and then go back to shots when she is in a movie, who knows's what she does, but umm you can have butter pecan icecream and potato chips in moderation......I know I had both at my son's part with the correct dual wave bolus I did just fine i spiked a little to 150 post meal but came right back down LOL.......it can be achieved

If you google "celebrity diabetics" there's a long list...interesting to read.
I think I read that Halle is using a pump. She was talking about having to take it off temporarily for the bikini scene in the James Bond movie. The times I have read bout or seen her interviewed on TV, she has been very open about her diabetes. I always admired Mary Tyler More for the same reason. Like it or not, celebrities are role models to younger people, so it can't hurt to have some celebrity diabetics out there speaking up. We all know well what their lives are actually like.
By the way Ant Hill, Male ballet dancers are superb athletes. Strength, balance, timing, coordination, they have it all. That's the reason some football teams use ballet in their training programs. It's also tough to find enough of them since it's sometimes perceived as "sissy." SOMEONE has to hold that lady swan up in the air so she can show off :T Mich

I dont think Halle Berry is actually a type 1. I've read other things which say she was able to quit using insulin by taking various herbal supplements, etc. I think she has some subtype of diabetes that is more common in african amercian people, but which is not actually type 1. I will go have a look and see what I can find out about it..

This is from the children with diabetes forum, suggesting she may have type 1B
Type I or Type II????????? - Page 2 - Children with Diabetes Forums (http://forums.childrenwithdiabetes.com/showthread.php?p=49153)
This one says she has type 2
Berry's fitness work not just about beauty (http://www.palmbeachpost.com/health/content/shared/health/weightloss/halleberry06.html)
Others say she has type 1.
This discussion has come up several times on another forum I use, and it appears that it has never really been made clear what type of diabetes she has.
www.realitycheck.org.au :: View topic - Halle Berry, type 1 or 2? (http://realitycheck.org.au/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4927&highlight=halle+berry)
www.realitycheck.org.au :: View topic - little off topic, but curious... Halle Berry (http://realitycheck.org.au/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3630&highlight=halle+berry)
I guess one way or another it raises the profile of diabetes, but it would still be interesting to know just what type she has.
