Newly Diagnosed

Hello every one.
My name is Mariah, and I was just diagnosed as Type 2. I went to the hospital 4 days ago with a BS level of 480, and was admitted. I am here to learn and lessen my confusion. I have to admit at this point I have had so much information thrown at me in 4 days, I am confused. I am picking things up fast, and will continue to read and learn. Thanks for being here.

Hi Mariah, welcome. It's scary to get that diagnosis, and it's a lot to take in. Glad you found the forum. How are you currently treating your diabetes? Do you have a monitor? Are you testing regularly? Testing is so very important in order to keep good control. If you test 2 hrs after your first bite of a meal, you'll see how certain foods affect your blood sugars and know how to make better choices.

For me, i'm on metformin and I eat a low-carb diet, avoiding breads, potatoes, rice, pasta and sugar. I'd suggest you meet with a dietitian who can give you some guidelines, but even then, testing is so important.

It seems like a lot to take in at first, but it does get easier with time.

When you feel like reading more about diabetes, there is an excellent book i'd recommend "Type II Diabetes, The First Year," by Gretchen Becker. It's available at Borders and Amazon.com, probably other places as well. It answers a lot of questions you've not even thought of yet.

Hang in there, you'll do fine and you're not alone. Read a posts, ask lots of questions. We're all here to help each other.

Welcome to the forums! Weird that they admitted you with a bs of 480...I had a bs of 504 and they still didn't admit me. They put an IV in me, and sent me home within ~2 hours. Although I live in Canada and maybe the hospitals are different here.

Also, my tester measures in mmol/L and you guys are using mg/dl...it's really confusing :$

Hi Mariah, I am right there with you but you know what? It does get easier with time, I know you have heard that so many times, but it really does. When I first found out, I was so overwhelmed that I just wanted to hide from it, but survival has it's way of not allowing you to do that.

I wish I had found THIS place before any of the others, my confusion wouldn't have been so much and I have learned more here than in any one source I could find, including my Doctors.

I tend to trust and have a little more faith in information collected from people whoo live with it versus people who don't and these folks here have a wealth of helpful and very HONEST info. :)

Hi Mariah: :) I'm Glad that you made it here.
I know there is sooo much to learn and it is
overwhelming, scary and confusing. Every
Diabetic is different so not everyone uses the
same treatment, etc. or share all the same ideas.
Just take your time Hon. You were just dxd. so
you have lots of time to learn it. Any questions,

First I will say Welcome your in the best forum around. You have already been given some tips from others. Ask alot of questions and someone here will know the answer. I hope you have a meter because the best thing you can do is test test test.
