Help me solve a mystery!

Hello all.
So I dont know if Im type one or type two. My doctor dodges the question. Here are the clues.
When I was first diagnosed I (I was still quite upset) I said that I wish I had kept better care of my body earlier so that I wouldn't be in this situation. (Im 5'11" and 260 pounds. Well 220 now) My doctors reply was "It wouldn't have made a difference" He did some blood test for something around my pancreas. It sounded like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me but her said it was low and "we might not have as much of a problem as he was expecting" My dietitian believes I am type one and my doctor dosen't want to tell me. Can anyone use these small clues to make an educated guess? Thanks

How old were you?

What was your blood sugar at diagnosis?

Were you hospitalized at diagnosis?

How long since diagnosis?

How are you currently being treated? How much success are you having with that?

Do you know if you had ketones at diagnosis?

First of all I'd DEMAND your doc to tell you! This is YOUR body and health he's messin with!!

If he won't comply, then I'd find me another doctor who will!!

But as Funnygrl said, we'd need more info, and still, we are not docs.

Melissa- unfortunately, sometimes the doctor doesn't always know themselves and the best they can do is guess. My doctor was never really sure what type I had. He calls me type 1, but I think that's simply because type 1 is the "safer" treatment route if I am in fact type 1, and has been extremely effective thus far. But I don't really have a real answer. I sort of pressed the issue for a bit, and he asked me what I would do differently if I was a type 2. I said, "Nothing" and he agreed that he would do nothing either. So instead of going through more expensive testing and torturing myself with the "ifs and maybes" I'm a type 1 by all intents and purposes.

yes, I see your point Christine. Altho, if he's unsure, he needs to say so, and not hem-haw around the bush about it! Though many docs think they're God, they aren't, and they sometimes don't have all the answers! A good doc will admit that! :wink:

Almost (He called me to the hospital to admit me then let me go later)

Insulin Apedra and lantus
I think its going okay. Average BG 110-160
Do you know if you had ketones at diagnosis?
Yes I did I think



I hope these answers help figure it out. I know I need to go find an endo.

OP- Those answers help a lot. I would say you are type 1 based on them.

My guess would be Type 1 also. If you did indeed have a C-peptide test, I'd DEMAND the results from your doctor.

It sounds like you are not seeing an endo. That would be the first thing I would do. Myself I would like to know what type I have. There are differences between the two.
