Just started monitoring my blood sugar 2 days ago. Blood glucose has been creeping up for years, but have also been watching total carbs and glycemic index/exercising in hopes of turning back the numbers. It hasn't......so although he hasn't made the big diagnosis yet...I am at 130 fasting and 6.5% on my last labs. So I'm eating like I normally do, which is less carbs than the diabetic association says to start with and all have a low glycemic 55 or below index. Here's the question.. Some of my before meal testings (with no food since the last meal) and a.m. fastings are higher than the 2 hour post meal testings. Sometimes it has been reversed, however, with my blood sugar rising over 50 points post meal when a meal has only included as little as 24 carbs with a glycemic index below 30! (Yes, I'm watching portion size and the meal includes lots of protein) Any ideas? I'm not on any meds for diabetes at this time, but do take other meds for chronic pain which supposedly do not have glucose elevation as a side effect listed in the PDR.

Well, I don't think it would apply to you but................
Some of us, when having gone too long without eating, get liver dumps which raise B/G--------I suppose that this could be true of even "Normals" as well.

Welcome to the group. I am so glad you have been proactive in your treatment. For type 2's the low glycemic seem the best way for at least 75% of us.
Since you have just started with the meter, I'd give it a month to get some averages. Just keep on doing what you have been doing. Then start your "testing" phase. Maybe eating your fats and proteins first and then the carb in a meal. Maybe eating less and snacking more in between. Or plan you main carb intake just before your exercise. See what works for you.

Welcome to the forum.
I was recently diagnosed and took it upon myself to "tell" my doctor I wanted to see a diabetic educated dietician. It was worth it for me, I've gotten my meals in balance, and she pointed out from my food log where i could make some very minor changes in how I ate.

Thanks for all of your help. I'm probably overthinking this already. It is driving me crazy because I eat SO LOW carb (<130 g per day) and most foods are less than 55 on glycemic index, yet there doesn't seem to be a ryme or reason. Last night went to book club and "splurged" on a Seven Layer Square w/graham, coconut, chocolate at about 9:00 pm and blood sugar this morning (fasting) was way lower than yesterdays. Here's another question.....how soon should I see the effects of exercise on blood sugar? Right now I'm not seeing it........Can anyone recommend a book that has more advanced endocrine info including glucagon dumps by the liver not just the usual happy talk about lower your carbs/glycemic/exercise and everything will be great?

Ellenberg and Rifkin's Diabetes Mellitus EXPENSIVE so you might try a library.

Thanks for the library suggestion about the book. It does look like what I want and need, but as you said it is EXPENSIVE.
