Hi, My name is Judy and I was diagnosed last week. Still in a spin cos went to Dr for hrt palpitations. ECG's holter monitors and blood tests were done and yep I've got diabetes too. Found out on 14/6 and retrenched on 15/6. Well, thats my 3 bad luck stints - hrt probs, no job and Diabetes!!!! It must get better - Am confused as to which meters are good - any suggestions. Have done heaps of research and reading - don't know where to start - any info gratefully received. Hopefully diet and exercise will assist my problem too. I'm not a great exerciser and love sweet things so total new start and change in lifes habits. What is best way to begin.
Thanks in anticipation of any info
Judy:confused:

Wal-mart has good meters called Reli On (test strips are cheap too but check to see if your insurance will cover it). Welcome aboard, btw.

Hi & Welcome to the forum Judy. Nice people and tons of information to be found here.

I'm not a big fan of exercising, but when I was dx'd 4 years ago, I got into the habit of walking almost every evening. I also follow a low-carb diet and log everything I eat in the course of a day.

Welcome Judy. Lots of great advice and good people here. I think any monitor you get would be okay...the most important thing is to get one and start testing several times a day. There's a "freebie" thread here that has free monitors you can send for.

What meds are you on for your diabetes? I'm assuming your T2?

Hang in there, diabetes can be managed, it does get easier with time. You're not alone, we're here to help.

Judy, you did not say where you are from but I'm guessing Europe by the date postings. You probably don't have a wal-marts but aren't your meters and supplies free?
You could take the pills and hope it doesn't get worse or you could cut way back on what you have been doing and start doing new stuff. There are lots of free way to exercise. You have multiple things going on right now so you'll have to be careful as to how much you do but like the hare, slow and STEADY wins the race.
Good luck and welcome to the group

Hi Judy,

Welcome. Meters are kinda subjective in what someone likes. The key is to test, get a good idea of where you are, what foods cause the bg to rise, and like someone told me when i joined here "Don't Guess, Test!" :)

What is best way to begin.

Place your right foot in front of your left foot; then place your left foot in front of your right foot. Repeat for one hour. Do that daily.

Welcome to the forums Judy. Exercise is key so finding something that you enjoy is helpful to start on your journey to good health. Play with your kids if you have them. If they are grown then find something you enjoy doing. Walking the dog, riding a bike in the evening. Geocaching gets you out hiking. Check out the geocaching.com website. A lot of friends I know have this hiking treasure hunting sport and play for the exercise and fun. Get a kayak. There are stable recreational ones that you can take to any lake to enjoy. Exercise doesn't mean work. It can mean fun.

If you go the the free pump website here, make sure you say you test 4+ times a day or they will not approve one. If not, Reli-On at Walmart is a good one. Go to your pharmacist and ask them if there are any promotions going on. I did that and was handed a free meter.

Good luck and welcome to the forums!!!!
