Today I've been offered a job in Dubai. Understandably this is a heck of major step for anyone and in addition to being away from my friends, family, and if I'm unlucky, my girlfriend, I've also got the somewhat major issue of coping with diabetes out there.
Now, I'm aware that Dubai is very advanced in lifestyle by anyone's standards, not just those of the Middle East's. The job I've been offered also includes health insurance - I'm currently checking to find out exactly what that covers but for now let's assume that this covers all my diabetes stuff. What I'm trying to find out is the quality of care available in Dubai. Does anyone here have experience of diabetes care in the UAE? I'm aware of the American Hospital which from what I've seen appears to be a great facility and that there's some sort of global diabetes conference taking place in Dubai in 2011, so on the face of it things look pretty good but I was wondering if anyone here's got any anecdotal evidence of the care out there.

Hey congrats, How about go to the american consulate and find about medical care there. I'm sure that they have a office in dubai that can tell you what you can expect.

dubai has good healthcare but to be honest with you, the doctors are short on practical experience. however, the healthcare city (Dubai Healthcare City | Home (http://www.dhcc.ae)) holds a lot of promise and the diabetes centre in abu dhabi (which is an hour's drive from dubai) seems to be pretty good as well. go to Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (http://www.icldc.ae) for more info

Of course you've asked Dr. Google: diabetes dubai - Google Search (http://www.google.com/search?q=diabetes+dubai&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1)
You do realize you will need to make radical changes to your social practices ;)

I don't have direct knowledge, but I recall my brother-in-law worked there for two years and had his wife and kids with him. His wife has a non-diabetes endocrine disorder and I don't recall health care having ever been mentioned as a problem. They are American; I don't know if that could have made any difference.

Deus, I have a friend living in Dubai right now. I will ask her about healthcare there. I know her husband had a heart attack and the care he recieved was excellent. I can get more detail if you would like. Her and her husband are from Zimbabwe, moved to Australia and then to Dubai. She loves it there. She said she is bracing for the 120 degree weather expected in August.
