View Full Version : Morning Readings - How Important Are They?

I am on no medication and have elevated numbers only in the morning.

I am curious if your blood sugar readings are good all day but are elevated in the morning after fasting all night how bad is it.

I am curious becuse it would seem that the fact that your numbers are good all day would be important.

Anyone know the answer?

All high numbers are bad. High numbers for 8 hours a day or 33% of the time can not be good.

There's lots of unknowns here such as your medication regimine. One thing that can happen is you might bottom out in the night, say 4am. This causes your liver to kick into gear to bring you back out but raises your BGs.

Many type 2's and type 1's treat this effect with a long lasting snack in the evening: protein and complex carbs.

Another posibility is slovenliness. If I don't exercise reglarly, my FBG will often rise. When I do exercise, I get good numbers.

Being a pumper, my basals are tuned to my natural nighttime lows so I don't bottom out and rebound, much.

3 out of 5 mornings fasting sugars are above 8 mmol/L. I have DP really bad. Otherwise I have really good numbers all the time. Not only frustrating but... I really hate to think what damage being so high can cause in the long run. I'm having a check in July and this topic will certainly be on the agenda.

Since your not on med's i highly doubt your bottoming out in the middle of the night and then rebounding in the morning, I think you have DP.....Dawn Phenomenon where your liver dumps the glucose in the early hours of the morning to start waking you up....

I don't know many cures for this without some type of med's or insulin, maybe talk to the dr about it, I am much more concerned for myself with being stable all night long, because no food is interferring, with me so the 12 hrs i have not ate, I want to be as level as possible....

I, too, struggle with getting my morning #'s under 110. If I eat later in the evenings, it's impossible for me. I work a 2nd job, so usually my dinner is around 8 pm and blood sugar reflects that. When I had a week off my 2nd job, I noted consistently that my #'s were 110 or less, sometimes in the upper 80's low 90's fasting, so I assume the late eating does it for me, even eating the right foods.

As to if the morning #'s are important, higher than normal #'s, whenever they occur, to me are important, as my goal is non-diabetic #'s.

I wondered too if the morning numbers were all that important, as the few places I've seen DP addressed in (books and internet articles) it has been made to sound as if it might be just a perfectly natural process. It's hard to find any advice directed at type 2's other than "discuss with your doctor."

I've tried both having and not-having an evening snack and neither seems to make any difference for me. I consistently wake up with BG in the 150's.

I have started to notice, however, that when I exercise in the evening my morning numbers are lower. I had a one-hour dance class last night and this morning I woke up at 124.

I am dealing with the high fasting numbers myself..they range anywhere from 120 to 160's..I panick everytime i do my readings...So i talked to my dr about this...he told me for this next week he wants me to check my sugar at 3am..(thats a rough one) and then again at waking..or 8am usually...he is trying to figure out mine also..because all thru the day they are great..I am on oral meds so we are working on mine and yep he thinks it is the dawn phen..I just freak every morning :)

i too am dealing with this. its really making me mad too. Ive been told to go to bed with something in your stomach. so i ate one sheet of graham crackers. i even took insulin for it. i woke up this morning with a 233 reading. WTF is going on!? im sure most of you can relate, but i am freaking out because for the past couple of weeks, ive been high every morning. i do tend to go to bed at like 1 or 2 in the morning some nights. others, its around midnight. would going to sleep this late effect anything? i do tend to eat kinda late too, like after 8 or 9 pm. as for my exercise, its once a week ill go out and swim. i honestly hate exercise. I was doing the wii boxing thing, but it got old.

Rich, for your prebedtime snack, have something a little high in protein, like walnuts or a slice of cheese or some a tsp of peanut butter. This would hold you better than would graham crackers, as it would digest more slowly, helping keep your levels more stable. It is frustrating to do all we know to do and still see higher #'s.

Ohhhhhhh this drives me.

I haven't found an answer to this yet - I've tried vinegar, almonds, almond butter, green apples and no sugar added organic applesauce (4oz).

No matter what I'm 130-136 in the AM - regardless of my bedtime reading (about 11pm).

Only two things that yanks it down - not eating for 4-6 hours (I know - bad but I was experimenting) or the byetta shot but after the shot I get too low and bounce back up again so I have to eat again an hour in after the shot to keep it even.

Thought I must have wrote this in my sleep...then realised it was RichM...LOL!! I usually have good morning numbers, between 4-6mmols, until 2 weeks ago when it was over 10! Yikes. :eek: Previously, have found if I get one high morning reading, the next two mornings will be high too, then back to normal. Not this time! Going to see my doc next week...maybe get my evening meds inceased. Don't think I'm going low overnight...it was 7.1 at 3am today. Glad its not just me!!

Yep....at times it seems we are all just yo-yo's on the finger of life ;-)

I get really tired of trying to find the right balance...morning are too high for me also. "too high in the am....too low after b-fast....too high in the afternoon....too high at night" :banghead:

but...alas, we continue and that is the journey we all share - the journey of continuing.

I've been Type 2 since Nov 99 and my morning numbers were usually around 80, pretty good. A couple of months ago, they started going up and now run anywhere from 170-210! Tonight before bed I'm having walnuts, peanut better, crackers, cheese and wine! Man, this DP is frustrating!

If my morning numbers are less than 150, so what. I may have eaten a little off. Maybe it was cumulative of the days events or maybe it was not a good nights rest. A little stress could put you off. A 200 would concern me. But if my daytime numbers were good and evening numbers were good, you figure you are not 8 hours high. It doesn't jump the minute you fall asleep. It may stay low and rise as you are waking, maybe just rises slowly. Maybe the high morning is because you stressed your muscles a lot the day before and they are repairing. Consistent high would make me change things
