Having just said on another thread that the French eat healthy small portions I'm about to ask abouta very unhealthy meal:)
On Sunday I'm taking part in a 10km run followed by a meal. Usually I take my own picnic with me but decided to join in this time.
Menu:
dry cured ham with melon (not too bad)
Confit de canard( duck preserved in duck fat very high in fat)
Aligot ( pureed mashed potato mixed with huge quantities of creme fraiche and cheese)
Green salad
patisserie (probably a fruit and confectioners custard tart)
Red wine a volonte
The meal might take 2 hours to eat and has a lot of fat, If I take enough at the start to try cover the carbs I think I might very well go hypo in the middle of it.(remember I'll have just run 10km)
Suggestions?

If you think you'll go hypo in the middle of it then I wouldn't bolus at all.

i would work out the bolus for the whole meal, take only half at the beginning and then take the rest about an hour and a half later.
eat and enjoy! my mouth is watering looking at that list of yummies!

What is set in bold is the glucose buster!! and if i know french cooking is definitely high in calories since they live in a cold country. So i would bolus but you have a 10Km run before the meal but then see the BG's result and then say would you bolus, Anyway after a 10Km run you would think that you have earned a nice meal. Still have a test before you enjoy that meal. :)

another method that works well for me is......
when i eat out, i bolus for each course as a seperate meal, that way i dont end up with a sky-high BG later on......also if my eyes were bigger than my belly.... i havent taken a stack of insulin for food i wont eat!
i dont mind taking more shots so this isnt an issue for me and doesnt actually spoil the meal for me.

Take your insulin later and take less of it. Your muscles will be burning up glucose the moment it hits your system and will enhance the action of your insulin. Your current ratios won't apply.
I would bolus an hour after you start eating, maybe before you eat the tart. The potato will take a while to get into your system anyway and won't affect you until later. Also watch the wine - it's fine to drink but if you've been running it'll go to your head much more quickly and it'll also impair your liver's glucose output.
Best advice is not to worry too much if your BGs go a little high - it's not the end of the world so don't worry about matching carbs to insulin exactly.

Question: is wine part of your daily diet? If not, don't bolus for it at all. You'll go high then fall low later.
I'd take half my bolus when the Aligot arrived. I'd take the other half when the patisserie arrives or even later due to the high fat in the meal. If this exercise is unusual for you, I'd cut back some.

Thanks everyone, I think that I'll try splitting the dose taking half with the aligot and half later. I do drink wine most evenings but not normally at lunchtime so I'll watch that.I'll tell you how I get on. I've avoided meals like this one so far but I decided just for once I'd risk it.

Yes you're right my trouble is I worry a lot about it and have an excellent A1c but lots of 'minor' hypos as a result.

It may not be that good, it is mass catering. What amazes me is that almost every village has some sort of fete in the summer catering for anything up to 500.
