What was your A1C at diagnosis? Mine was 9.6.

What A1C denotes pre-diabetes? A coworker (diagnosed with "borderline" diabetes 5 years ago, diet and exercise control)just had an A1C of 6.8 and doc told her she was pre-diabetic, to continue her diet and exercise. I would have thought an A1C of 6.8 would denote full-blown T2 diabetes. Your thoughts please?

Mine was 11 something...can't remember specifically.
My mother just had an a1c done about two months ago and it was 7...they are still telling her that she doesn't have type 2, just insulin resistance. She's taking metaphormin, but they keep telling her that this resistance will probably go away and she won't need the meds any longer. It makes no sense to me.

I've no clue, because my (first) doc was a nimrod!! But guesstimating, somewhere between 10 and 13.

The first one I had, 18 months in, was a 6.9 my average was about 140 at that time. So yea, I'd say that's (6.8) considedred "full blown" T2. In my book anyway.

I think it was 10.8. It's been awhile...

10.0

My fasting BG of 303 lead to the A1c test being ordered. I shudder to think what my post meal numbers were running during that time. Looking back, I was probably severely full-blown D for nearly a year before being Dxd.

It was 11.4 at diagnosis.

I would also have to think that a person who watches their diet and exercises, and still has an A1c of 6.8, would be diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes.

I was 13.9, still wonder how I functioned, no wonder I was always so tired.

I don't know! I was never told. In fact, I learned about A1C YEARS after I was told I was diabetic. After my last pregnancy, I went back for bloodwork and was told I was still in the grey area so therefore... I had diabetes. I wish I knew what was my A1C back then!!!!!

I have no idea. I don't even believe I was given an A1C until several long years after diagnosis.
Heck, I remember the tablets to check urine for ketones and reading bg's from a color chart (then I got my first Ames monitor).

Aww... And here I was hoping to have the highest...

I was up around 13.4 or 13.5 when I was diagnosed just after arriving in the ER with heavy DKA and a side order of pancreatitis. As you said, no wonder I'd been feeling so awful.

I'm pretty sure they were not doing A1c's when I was diagnosed. My initial Bg was 327.

Mine was 6.2, and there was no "pre" attached to my diagnosis.

I've had pains & tingling in my feet for a couple of years now that is probably neuropathy, so I tend to believe that I passed the pre- stage awhile ago.

Mine was 12.6 and the strange thing is that I really and truly felt fine. Well, maybe a wee bit sleepy after some meals, but that still happens at times.

My A1c at diagnosis was 13.4 -- but the thing that really impressed my doc was that my random glucose level was just over 1,000 mg/dl (I'd had quite a bit of cranberry juice before I went in to see her because, well, gosh, for some strange reason I was just so darn thirsty). The only good thing about starting off with numbers that high was that I have never been in denial about being diabetic. And there's no better motivator for me to stay in control than to remember just how awful I felt the month or two before I finally dragged myself to the doctor.

Wow... my first a1c was 7.0 and My bs was at 250 when I tested. My eyes were blurry and I felt really bad all the time. I have never been in the 300's and couldn't imagine what I would feel like that high.

Prediabetes: Screening and diagnosis - MayoClinic.com (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/prediabetes/DS00624/DSECTION=5)

A fasting blood sugar level under 100 milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood (mg/dL) is considered normal. If your blood sugar level is 100 to 125mg/dL, you have prediabetes — also called impaired fasting glucose (IFG).

If I read the chart correctly, 6.8 is 165 and 7 is 172. I'm not a doctor, but I would think those readings would indicate diabetes.

P.S. I can't remember what my A1C was, but it was high.

In the UK, HbA1C is not used for the definitive diagnosis of diabetes, it all comes down to fasting glucose laboratory tests

Mine was 7.7 end of April and got the results May 2 of this year. Will see what my diet and excercise will bring me in August when I do another.

I just started taking Metformin 500mg at dinner two days ago. Hope to bring my fasting BG down to a reasonable number. The rest seem to be in line so far.

My GP while good at somethings, isn't with Diabetes, I'm going to an Internal Medicine specialist recommended by my diabetic nurse/trainer.

I don't know exactly what mine was, I do know that it was below 7%. as i was always told as soon as your HbA1c hits 7% you will need to go on treatment.

I was dxd. by a country Doc when I was little.
He didn't allow me to be sent to the Hospital
an hour away for treatment due to what they
did to my older Brother. I don't even know if
they had A1c's done back then. I doubt it.
I never had blood drawn 'til I was older.

I was at 14 when I finally went into the E.R. with a BG of 573. And all I could think about was wanting to take "another" nap.

Too high ;-)

Diagnosed in the ER with etimated BGL of over 560 - IV insulin, etc. Man, that was a party I don't ever want to get invited to again.

HMMMMM....reading all the others I think I have the record low!!!!

Mine was 5.1, I know really a normal range. OGTT found the issue. My body was haywire as high as 199 two hours after meals to as low 48. Really stange rocky first 3 years (the prediabetic years). I'm in my 4th year now T-2 diabetic.
