Diabetisweet Diabetic Sugar Substitute (http://www.netrition.com/diabetisweet_page.html)


Anyone used this stuff? It still shows 4 or so grams of carbs per serving.

It claims it will not raise blood sugar at all.

Anyone used it for tea or baking?

Or is there a better alternative? Stevia and such?

Acesulfame-K - this stopped me in my tracks, the fact that it is in this sweetner makes me not want to use it. Scientists have advised the FDA not to approve this product because it causes problems in testing of rats, rabbits and dogs.

From CSPI's web page:
... acetoacetamide, a breakdown product, has been shown to affect the thyroid in rats, rabbits, and dogs. Administration of 1% and 5% acetoacetamide in the diet for three months caused benign thyroid tumors in rats. The rapid appearance of tumors raises serious questions about the chemicalÕs carcinogenic potency."

This is the same thing that they are going thru with Aspartame, which if I am not mistaken is related or has some of the same effects.

My husband and I went on a diet a few years back and we both became very ill. My husband worse than me, he had serious health problems and had to undergo many many many tests and it wasn't until nearly 2 years later that we found out he has a serious allergy to Aspartame, as did I. That was the only constant we had in similarities in our diets.

I can't legally quote the person involved here on this because I got the information form someone who used to work for the company that distributes aspartame, but the husband of a friend of mine became deathly ill while working there and handling the product. Last I heard, they were still in paperwork knee deep over this.

I use Splenda and I don't notice any side effects from that at all and they have it in packaging that you can measure it like sugar as well as cook with it, also have a Brown Sugar Variety of it as well.

I hope I don't get into trouble for this post, but I have strong opinions against anything that Scientists have this much information against. :eek:

Don't worry, you won't get into trouble. ;)

Personally, I'm not too keen on any of the sugar alternatives, especially when chemicals are involved. I'd much rather use pure cane sugar before using any of the artificial stuff....That's just my opinion though. Others may feel differently & I truly believe it's a matter of "what works for one, may or may not work for others."

Exactly, if you aren't showing signs of an allergic reaction to aspartame, then you won't have the problems we had in my house. MANY do, but many do NOT too.

Pure cane sugar? Hmm, I didn't think I could have this, it isn't safe for us is it? Or is it? Forgive my ignorance, I am still learning the "what I can and cannot have" aspect of this whole thing. :stupido3:

All I DO know for sure is I have had experiences with these two mentioned here and neither was a very good experience. But like you say, each one reacts differently. ;)

I had a bad reaction from drinking too much Diet Coke (or, as I sometimes call it now, Diet Croak, lol). I kept throwing up, and from that point on, vowed to only drink the stuff on occasion (i.e. when going to movies or only when in the mood for it). :eek:

Since I'm Type I, I can cover for sugar with insulin. If one's diet controlled, however (as some Type 2s are), then it's not recommended. Stevia may work in some cases, but one still has to be careful & check their sugar levels to see how they may react. Splenda's also a good alternative (well, I'd at least choose it over stuff like Sugar Twin, Sweet 'n Low <saccharin> or Equal <aspartame>), but if there's a more natural way, I'm usually all about that, lol. ;)

Same here, I much prefer the natural if I can possibly get it. ;)

As for diet cokes, I rarely ever drink them. Like you said, when I go to the movies or something. It's Splenda sweetened or just unsweetened tea for me. I have a 12 pack of cokes here I have had since I was diagnosed almost 2 months ago. I may drink one or two a week at home and that's only if I don't have tea made. lol

I use splenda for making some desserts and for koolaid when i get tired of water. I'm not much for soda, havent' had one in over a year. I do put a lot less splenda in than it would call for, comes out too sweet for me.

30 years ago I thought I could not live without cokes. Got started on Diet Dr. Pepper. Thru the years I have probably tried many of the different brands. Now I don't drink a soda. Sometimes will drink a A &W Diet Root Beer. Never had any reactions. Don't think I could stand a regular coke now. Think it would just taste like a syrup. I remember being away from home one day. Was in a Super Center when I realized my bg was low. Sent my sister to find some juice. She came back with a coke. Threatened to kill me if I spit it on her. I had done things like that when I was really low before. I use Splenda on cereal.

I use a variety of sweeteners. The products I consume have what's in them and so you cannot always eliminate them. Plus if you are only consuming a small amount of anything, there is less likely to have a reaction.
I looked at the comments about Acesulfame-K, I think the same comments are being made for all sweeteners on the market right now. Mo matter what the product is, there will be an adverse reaction to it by some people. I am not allergic to anything but if I have something with cheese,spinich and broccoli in it, I get bumps for a little while, Any two, no reaction. Has to be all three. Go figure.
I've cut down on sweeteners in general, avoid corn syrup the most as that's what I believe to be the worst. Moderation is the key to our health so if I use a little of this, a little of that, my system should handle it no problem. I look it as getting a little rain now and then and the earth soaks it up. You get a monsoon and flooding and therefore damage occurs. Avoid the downpours and you body should be fine.

Try Stevia it is a great natural product and used worldwide. You can even buy a Stevia plant and use the leaves to sweeten different things.

30 times sweeter than sugar and no after taste.
