Ladies Who Had Babies with NHS!!

Hi Ladies (or males who have stories of their girlfiends/wives experiences?)

How was your care in NHS for your diabetes control/diabetes related comps/baby during pregancy? after pregancy? was it awful, good, adequate, excellent? Please share your stories as I need to make a decision, have a baby in the UK or wait till I move back to Canada? ;) I realise the BS control is really up to the indiviudal but how was the monitoring, care and support under NHS?

Hi

I had great care during my pregnancy & whilst in hospital. The only thing I didn't like was having to go on a sliding scale drip when I had my son as it really messed up my blood sugars :( If we have another baby I will fight to avoid going on a drip again.

My little boy is 2 months old today & everything is still fresh in my mind so if you have any specific questions ask away....

Thanks Georgia, no real speciifc questions, not really in the position to have a baby yet, was just after some background info, not ready!!!

One thing though, why did you have the sliding scale drip? was that a constant source of glucose dripped to you? Seems a weird choice for a type 1 in labour?

The sliding scale is protocol in my hospital. I had a c-section & the drip is so that insulin & glucose are ready to hand - but the nurses take your blood sugar & then amend the insulin/glucose drip according to their chart - well, we know we all have insulin needs!! My blood sugar plummeted & later rocketed (I was not happy).
