Hi,

I was just diagnosed last Thursday. I had been checking my urine for ketones because I knew that I probably had diabetes because I had gestational years ago. For the last couple of days I have not had any ketones and my sugars have been in the 130's fasting and the 90's before meals. Tonight my blood sugar before dinner is 86 but my ketone strip shows moderate ketones. Does anybody have any idea why this is happening?

Ketones are not dangerous unless accompanied by high bg. Are you losing weight or eating very low carb? Both could explain the ketones. You also create ketones due to lack of insulin, essentially your body starts breaking down it's fat supply to use for fuel as it cannot utilize glucose. Good luck and welcome aboard.

I had gestational as well but my sugars never returned to normal... when pregnant i had moderate to severe ketones in my urine ALL the time. It's due to lack of calories and the way things are broken down as Cyborg said. Try adding more calories to your diet and see what happens. Keep a log of what you eat and the calorie intake to help find the source of the problem. As Cyborg said ketones are not dangerous unless your diabetes is out of control. keep us posted!
