I found this incredible and very liberating. I went kayaking yesterday with a friend. We kayaked a river fed lake for about three miles. On the way back, I tested and then took off my pump and snorkeled about two miles back to the car pulling the kayak. It was so hot outside it felt wonderful. Halfway back I tested and my blood sugar was LOW. I ate some Starbursts and went on with my snorkel trip back to the car. I tested again at about the one mile mark and I was still a bit low. Had a snack and kept on snorkeling. By the time I was about 1/2 mile from my destination we stopped and jumped back in the kayaks for the rest of the trip. When I arrived, I tested and I was in the 70's. I put my pump back on after a 2.5 hour break.
So.....if you want to never use a pump, you can just snorkel all day!!! It was amazing and fun to have this swim free break from my pump.

Right on Nancy! Sounds like a blast! I regularly take off my pump too, if I'm doing some heavy landscaping or something like that - it IS great and free feeling. I have a friend that's also a Type 1, and she NEVER takes off her pump! She doesn't even like to take it off for a shower. Funny how different people are! She can't believe that I take my pump off for hours sometimes - she acts like I'm absolutely crazy! Definately have to keep checking the numbers though (of course) because if you're not working out as hard as you think you are, the numbers will start creeping up. Snorkeling eh? I'll have to try that sometime!:)

I did the same thing yesterday. We took the kids to the water park at King's Island in Cincy, so when we got there, I tested, was good, and then took the pump off. I then tested about every hour. I actually had to have some sugar tabs a couple of different times, as I was low when I tested a few times. I never went above 118, and was right around 90 to 100 most of the times.
I told my wife that I guess I found a cure for my diabetes, and that I need to quit my job and just hang out at the water park all day every day -- it didn't work....I'm still going to work tomorrow :(

That is just so wrong Todd. I think she should be much more considerate and let you take good care of your health!!! :T If it makes you feel any better, I am not going to be able to snorkel every day either.

Good for you Nancy! I'm glad you had a fun day kayaking, but I wish I had been with you. I'm jealous!
I had the opposite happen to me last night. I took my pump off to take my nephew Aidan swimming in the pool. I was 118 right before going in. We floated around for about 45 minutes, got out of the pool, and went into the hot tub for 15 minutes. I sat around the back deck chatting with my family for another hour or so. I realize when I went to get dressed that I hadn't reconnected my pump. I tested and was 264! Had to give myself 2.5 units to correct and didn't dare eat my Reese peanut butter cups before bed! LOL
