View Full Version : Any new pumpers have absorption issues?

I posted a thread about the types of insulin people use in their pump, if anybody had issues with a specific type of insulin. In this one, I'll just narrow it down to plain "absorption issues."

I've had apparent said issues, I'd like to hear if other people have had the same problem with inexplicable high sugars using a new site (no cannula crimping, or other visible cause of a site failure like bleeding, pain). For me doesn't matter where, what type of set, my chances of a successful site are always 50/50 at best. Is my muscular body type the cause? I'm trying to think of everything that may be the underlying cause of my problems (since my endo "team" doesn't seem to care much). Thanks for any insight.

While I've never had those problems with a new site, I do think the muscular build question is a real probability. I find that if I use the straight in sets and the longer canula, It takes a lot more insulin to correct with and more in general. With the shorter canula I don't get this, and with an angled set inserted shallow (very ) I get my best absorption and need the least insulin.

I'm having similar problems. The absorption issues only seem related to new sets and did not start until about 3 months ago (been pumping about 15 months). I can tell you with certainty that it is not related to a muscular body type...

I try not to eat for a few hours after changing a set. I also use a temp basal to increase the insulin flow and will occasionally even do a bolus in anticipation of the rise in bg. The problem is that the insulin is going into me and it does eventually affect me, usually much later in the day. :(

I too, have noticed variances in absorption, depending on the length of infusion set used. I get way better absorption (currently, anyway) from an 8mm set than I do from a 6mm one.

Since I changed from the 6mms to the 8s, I've been doing better again & have now noticed a possible need for a decrease in basals.

That got me 911'd 2 months in. I have absorption problems after 3 days and problems closer to my belly button.
