View Full Version : Questioning now

I just ordered a clear 522, now I'm questioning whether I should have gotten the 722. I'm used to a 300 unit reservoir, and it's not that much bigger, but I certainly don't need 300 units and smaller is better. Thoughts?

You can always limit a 3 mL reservoir to 178 mL, but not vice versa...

How much bigger is it anyway? I've never seen a 722 in person, only the 5xx series.

i thought the same thing. It depends on how much you use in a day. I fill the 522 and it lasts me about 4 1/2 to 5 days. The 722 would last me 10 days. In the summer with the heat I'm in I don't know if the insulin would last that long. If you take a lot of insulin it would be worht it. I use about 35 units a day.

I am trying to find a size comparison of the two pumps now...

Weird, I just looked through my history and going back two weeks I can be as low as 38U a day to as high as 76U (twice as much), but it looks like I have many, many 45-51U days...Still, I like the option of 300U, it allows me some flexibility (although now, I may come to the conclusion that is all in my head).

This site says the 522 is smaller:

Minimed Insulin Pump Paradigm 522/Paradigm 722 (http://www.diabetesnet.com/diabetes_technology/insulinpumps_minimed.php)

Now I am looking for dimensions.

Aight, Dimensions:

How small is the MiniMed Paradigm Insulin Pump? The MiniMed Paradigm 522 Insulin Pump is about the size of a cell phone. The MiniMed Paradigm 522 Insulin Pump measures just 2 x 3.0 x 0.8 inches. The 722 model is about one half-inch longer in length (0.6 inch longer) than the 522 Insulin Pump: Exact dimensions are 2.0 x 3.6 x 0.8 inches.

Duh on the smaller, lol....

Here is an image of the two...
http://www.diabetesnet.com/images/pump_paradigm22.jpg

It appears that it's maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer/wider. Just the extra for the logo and then some extra space to the left of the "B" button.

The sizes are as follows in mm...
522: 51 x 79 x 20
722: 51 x 91 x 20

So the 722 is 12 mm larger, just around 1/2 inch.

Alright Smart Aleck, like I'm supposed to be able to notice a 1/2 inch disparity in a two inch by three inch picture!

Funny, I understand your apprehension...Since I previously had the 5xx models, I'd opt for the 7xx, only because I like the ability to use a larger reservoir (i.e. if the need arose). Can you call them to ask them for the larger one? Or are you going to stick with the 522??

Using other objects in the image as comparison yes. LOL

Gosh, you obviously have never analyzed crime scene photos and not had any tape measures or photo scales available. :T

Gordon, are you really using a reservoir TEN days? How do you do that??? And does anyone else??

No. I have the 522 and get 4 1/2 to maybe 5 days on the 522 smaller one. If I had the 722 I could probably get around 8.5 days at my current usage. I over estimated slightly.

I opted for the 7xx series funny. The size difference mostly is the chamber for the reservoir. I like the idea of being able to add a few units if I need the extra day. I usually use 35u - 40u per day. I keep a site in four days.

I'm sure the MM pumps are cool, especially with the CGMS support and all.

But... Am I the only one that thinks they are ugly? :vroam:

LOL Cyborg, I thought they were the best looking of the bunch. Hmmm what is that about beauty being in the eye of the beholder??"

In terms of look I think....

Animas wins for most professional and best adult looking
Cozmo wins for best kids looking
Minimed comes in 2nd best looking
Nipro Amigo wins for coolest colors
Accu-Chek Spirit comes in last (it's kinda bland)
Omnipod is most white, lol

I get eight days out of the 300 unit cartridge in my cozmo. I change my set every four days so it works out well.

I agree Cyborg. I really dont like the look of the newer minimed pumps, however I still want one because of the CGM features. As I have to wait another year and a half before I can upgrade I guess I can hope that the appearance improves by then.

To me the 522/722 looks very medical, I cant imagine anyone mistaking it for a phone/pager/mp3 player. I dont mean to offend anyone who owns or likes the look of these pumps, its just my personal feelings. I will still probably end up with one anyway, lol.

Funnygrl, I agonized over this very question when I got my 512. The extra 1/2-inch does make a difference to me size-wise especially if I'm wearing it under clothing, and I can get ~ 5 days out of a 180-unit reservoir. The only way I would need a bigger reservoir is if I was pregnant, and that's going to happen when pigs fly. For me, the smaller pump was the better choice, but YMMV.

And people routinely mistake it for a cell phone, pager, etc. I even had a guy ask me if it was a PID (a piece of environmental monitoring equipment used to check for chemical vapors)! That's my favorite one so far.... :D

I actually prefer the look over that of the Cozmo. Though my purple pancreas has grown on me.

I get a lot of "Hey Mister, your antennae is coming off of your cell phone..."

My 715 is greatly offended. It has gone invisible.....oh wait, it is clear. Nevermind.

I think a pancreas is pretty ugly, but I still want one.

I would go with the smaller one. I always change my site when I refill the reservoir, and having a smaller reservoir forces me to change the site more often.

Interesting. It looks like a pager to me (although who has a pager anymore). The Animas looks like a radio or walkie talkie to me, which is why I didn't get one. Yes, the only reason! LOL
