I was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes. I guess since the DX I have been a bit more concerned about my children. My four year old daughter, Jaedyn, has worried me the most. She is constantly drinking.. if she don't have her own drink, she is always coming, every 3-5 minutes to get a drink from me, and this is ALL day.
Anyways, a week ago or so, I tried to get her to let me take test her blood. Of course, she did not let me.. the whole stick the finger thing was too much for her. Tonight, though, she came and sat on my lap and out of the blue, asked me to do it. I did, but it was not the best time, she had eaten about 4 chocolate doughnuts about 30 minutes before. When I test it, it come up as 142... My question is, is that normal for a four year old after having eaten doughnuts? I hope so cause she is such a sweet little girl and I hate the idea of passing this disease onto her. I have it and her maternal grandmother had it, so, I guess there is some predisposition there.. but I really hope not.
thank you in advance for the help!

Hello Stech...I have type 1 and my son was dianosed with type 1 also when he was 4 which I was so upset about. But he's a trooper and he tests his own blood sugars and is also on the pump. As far as type 2, I'm sure it can happen but I'd have her checked out by her doctor just to be safe. Have you checked it when she didn't have anything sweet to eat? It very well could be because she had those donuts, but the thirsty part worries me. Either keep checking her yourself or have her checked out. Let us know how she makes out!! :)
I think about the wisest thing you could do would be to discontinue the chocolate donuts. A four-year-old doesn't need that kind of junk in their diet, let alone four of them at one time.
You are almost insuring that she will develop a problem later on (if not sooner.)

Stech, I wish I could tell you that 142 is an ok number, but it really isn't. I would suggest that you wash your daughter's hands carefully and test again. I tested my daughter a few months ago and her numbers were also high. I panicked. After thinking about it, we washed her hands and between her fingers carefully and tested again and her blood sugar was normal. Is there a chance your daughter washed her hands hastily? Lotion and other things can cause a test to be incorrect.
Kids often seem to drink a lot more than adults. My kids were constantly asking for drinks.
If you think your results were correct, I would definitely call your physician in the morning.
Good luck, I hope this turns out to be nothing.

thanks all for the advice... even the advice about cutting out the chocolate in her diet. I really do agree and since I was DX'd, I have been trying to be better about it. SHE LOVES CHOCOLATE and I used to be way too liberal with her about it.
notme, I washed her hands with some Purell Hand Sanitizer before testing... it may have been an erroneous reading. I am going to try and see if she will let me test her in the morning before she eats anything... if she won't, I will call the doctor first thing.
Once again, thank you all for the information and concern.

I think 142 (7.8) an ok number for 30 minutes after 4 chocolate doughnuts.
But I agree about it not being healthy. Don't cut out the chocolate, rather let her eat smaller portions. Try not to let her eat sweets when she's hungry. My daughter, who's also 4, knows that sweet stuff can only be eaten after meals (that way it's difficult for her to go overboard).
Kind of off topic now, I didn't believe that healthy eating habits can be taught to small children. But apparently my daughter has picked up on the idea that not everything that tastes good IS good and sometimes she's better at it than I am. ;) The last time we went to McDonalds she chose a salad!
And the other day I bought her a bottle of flavoured mineral water and asked if I could also have some. She started pretending to read the label and said "fine, but it's got 12 carbs, are you sure you want it?"

That's cute...Kids pick up on EVERYTHING, it's amazing. My daughter, who's also 4, does the same thing. Especially where me and her brother have diabetes, she knows what's good and what's not. :D

My daughter has four little girls and it is amazing how they can pick up on good eating habits. My oldest granddaughter has decided that she will not eat animals. She is a self imposed vegetarian. She has been doing this for two years. Since she is only seven, her mother has been working very hard to see that she gets the protein she needs to grow up healthy and the other kids have been watching. When the kids come in and ask for a snack, Kelley points them to the garden. She has tomatoes, strawberries, carrots and peaches growing in the backyard. The kids go and pick their snack.
Now with all of this said, there are still the days where they are kids making bad choices. This is just part of being a kid. The second daughter is an eating machine. She wants cookies, ice cream and anything else that is bad for her. My daughter didn't raise her any differently than the first. Just a different kid.
Kids do learn from their parents, but they also just have a different palate than adults and they make bad choices. Sugar is unfortunately appealing to just about all babies including, horses, monkeys and other animals. Probably not good for them either in excess.
Where is my cookie?
