View Full Version : +1 to Animas, -1 to all other electronics

Well, today I did something fun. I went canoeing for the first time. 8 mile canoe trip with 39 other people down the Mad River in Ohio.
I was anxious to get my new pump from Animas so I could go today as the other one had a crack. The new one survived today without any problems even after quite a few forced tips in the water and being in helping other upright their tipped canoes. So Animas gets a +1 for that today.
However, let's say my other devices didn't do so well. I placed all my BG meter, cell phone, pager, wallet, car keys (with keyless remote) in a plastic ziplock bag inside of a cooler I took with me. At lunch time I checked and everything was fine. However, sometime during the 3 hours after lunch water got into the cooler during a tip and then into the zip lock bag. My BG meter, cell phone, and pager are currently non-functional. Not sure how my keyless remote for my car still woks.
I'm not to worried about the pager as it's a work pager that I hate and I'll just say it stopped working. They'll give me a new one no questions asked. The BG meter is a so so loss as the only loss is everything since my last upload about 2 months ago. Kinda upsets me, but I'll live with it for now. I have enough backup meters. Maybe once it dries, it will work enough to upload the data from it.
The upsetting loss is my cell phone. Now, maybe it did a Dewey on me and it will work once it dries out. I'm hoping that's the case. I just really don't want to have to buy another one although I can get one very cheap. It's more the fact of it plus I had some numbers I don't know which stored on the actual phone and not the SIM card.
So I'm not sure how today turned out. Oh, and should I mention, I'm now running 390 because I just got home and could finally test. I guess my senses failed me today as I felt fine all day. Just tired from the rowing.

Good news at this time. My pager from work is back up and running. I found out how to take it appart, blew all the air off, and then checked the battery. The battery was beyond dead. I guess the water somehow killed the battery as I only put one in a week or so ago.
My Ultrasmart is near biting the dust though. LOL. If it does come back working, all it will be good for is downloading results as in my attempts to take it appart I've failed but yet still scratched the heck out of the case. I'm one step away from just giving the case a good yank and finishing it off so that it can dry out faster.

That sounds like it was fun & sounds like Animas does deserve a +1 (or more! :)). Glad to hear it worked for you without any trouble. I've used mine in water with no issues, too....but I generally wear the Cozmo most, so that's the one I usually get wet.

Oh no on the phone! I too, hope it only pulled a "Dewey" on you & that it will work again once it dries out. Was it on when the water got into it? Or was it off? At any rate, give it a while & put it in a warm/hot, sunny place (helps speed the drying process along ;)).
For others who may not know - the "Dewey" is what happened to me while I was visiting family in NC. We went to Santa's Land in Cherokee and I leaned down to pet some fish in the pond (from my paddle boat), forgetting that my phone was on my shirt. The phone decided to jump in the pond & take a swim with the koi (or as Carwy puts it, the koi decided to make a call)! I let it dry out for a couple of days & it worked once again. It's not as stable as it once was, but I can still make & receive calls and can access everything I need to.

Yikes on the 390! They totally need to make a waterproof meter! Heck, if they can make the Gz'One cell phone that's waterproof (too bad it's CDMA & not unlocked GSM), then I'm sure they could make a meter with the same protective covers & capabilities! Here's hoping your BG comes down soon & that everything will get back in working order once they all dry out.
P.S. Good to hear some stuff is starting to work again. You can use alcohol to help clean the insides (used to use it to clean PC boards at work), or try a blow dryer on a lower setting (if needed).

Dewey, I also learned something from you. So I can't say you never taught me anything. When I saw my phone wasn't on anymore (yes, it was on when it got wet) I knew something was wrong. When I removed teh back cover and took the battery out it was confirmed. I saw the "red dot." I couldn't remember ever seeing that before then I remembered you saying something about it and that's when I knew water got inside the entire phone. Right now I have it sitting in my utility closet where my dehudifier is. So I'm hoping that dries it out fast.

I dropped it 30% for 6 hours. At lunch I was 180 (after only about 90 minutes of canoeing.) The lunch I had wasn't very carb full at all. About 20 carbs total so 1 unit of insulin for me. I didn't bolus at all for that figuring I would drop some more as we still had 3-4 hours to canoe afterwards. Guess I was wrong there. Then we go to Cici for dinner. And since I couldn't test before, I had no idea if I was high or low. So I just gave as normal on the pizza and then testing about 2 hours after that when I got home to find out I was 390. Life truely does suck without a BG meter.

I have gotten plenty of electronics wet. Usually when they dry, they become completely functional again! It is truely amazing. I had this ipod that had soda spilled on it about 4 months ago. About 2 weeks ago, I opened it up and left it open for a few days. What do you know? The thing started working again.

That's nothing. We had an iPod that one of the children dropped in the toilet!!
After fishing it out, patting it dry, and leaving it for a few days, it was just fine. We didn't/couldn't open it up and it's been running ever since.
Wish the pumps were more like this. And why not the meters. They've only got really small openings, it should be possible to make them water resistant.

The Animas pump is water resistant.

The Animas pump has an IPX8 rating. Meters are usually free, so if one falls in the toilet it isn't much of a loss.

I actually have to disagree. The biggest thing I hated when my went in was the data loss on it. I only connect my meter to my computer every 3-4 months before a doctor's appointment. At the time of this incident, I think I had 2 months worth of data I almost lost. To me that's invaluable. The meter I didn't care, which is why it now looks like it was run over by a car (I attempted to take it appart to help it dry.)
UPDATE: I currently use the Ultra 2 now because I like the case for it better. Work did end up having to by me a new pager. Everything functioned on it as normal, except, it wouldn't receive any pages. I didn't discover that till one day when I accidentally paged instead of emailed myself at work. My cell phone was a total loss too. I'm still searching for a decent Motorola Cell that I can use on my network. I still give the ultimate thumbs up to Animas for being in the water as much as it was and still ticking.

I take my Animas into the shower with me every day.
I wear it when I go swimming. It's waterproof. Just replace the battery and reservoir seals every so often.

Negative. If it was I'd probably have no problem as everyone at work has Nextel so I could take one of their old ones. It's Cincinnati Bell which is a local company that operates off the AT&T/Cingular network yet is cheaper each month and has no contracts.
