I LOVE that place. It's expensive, but their food is down right just awesome. I don't get there to often, but I just handle it like Applebees or any other midscale hamburger joint. Oh, their nachos for dessert are the best.

So I am confused, how a diabetic could eat such things. I am newly DX'd type 2. So either i am missing out on something or type 1's can get away with more varied eating.
I am so craving a big juicy, bacon and cheese covered burger with garlic fries, but would never even try. I had like 8 garlic fries when I was first DX'd and my sugars went pretty high. At least to a place where it wasn't worth having.
Lucky you who can have such things. Yummy!!!!!!!!

Type 1s can generally get away with eating anything. Actually, in my opinion, most on insulin can get away with eating anything.

Julie, I am on insulin, but find I can get away with some things, as long as it is not that often or that much. I can eat a fast food burger, but not the fries. I can eat a few fries, but not the burger. Even with insulin, I have big spikes if I try to eat more than one big carb item. Before insulin, I made the kids walk with me to the pizza place, then I could have a couple of pieces, or we walked to Dairy Queen and I could have ice cream. Now I can't do the walking and it no longer works anyway, so I do not indulge very often, and I am very careful when I do, even with the insulin.

Julia: If you're not on insulin, you will have to be more careful as certain things will cause your blood sugar to spike.
If you're really craving that type of burger...have it...just have the bottom (thin) part of the bun. I'll just cut the bottom bun in half and have half my burger on bun and the other have without the bun. You still get the satisfaction of the burger, but aren't likely to go as high blood sugar-wise. If I really want french fries, I'll snatch 3-4 off hubby's plate and usually do okay...for me, bread is a bigger blood sugar trigger.
Also, as you go longer without certain foods, your cravings will go down as well.

I haven't been yet but it's from the same group that does Outback, BoneFish, and Carrabba's -- all of which I love :)

im on insulin also but i find that it may have something to do with weight. I'm around 140 and i can have a burger and fries without my BG going to high. My friend is a little hevier and his BG seems to go a little higher. Also if i want a burger, i try to go to "in n out" where they have lettuce wraped burgers.:D

We do have a couple in Columbus, but I have yet to eat there. Don't feel like driving 30 minutes for a burger.

as much as i love jimmy buffet's music, i cant say i would go out of my way to eat at his resturants. the one in key west (margaritaville) is some pretty bad food, but then again, i try to steer clear of chain resturants, and support local shops. the cheeseburger in paradise place, i ate at one in omaha while doing a contract job in january. ehh, it was okay. but i try not to eat any soy or hydrogenated oils, so i would pick somewhere else first. but if you like it, go for it!
i'm type 1 and have no problem with burgers and onion rings. love onion rings.

Well I went and ate the Mini Burgers and Fries. And then I went back a week later and ate them again. Great place to eat. Found one about 15 minutes from the house, we have 2 in Columbus and only thought we had one up north part of Columbus.
Great food.

As a type 2 you can eat anything you want, the caveat is that for a lot of things, it is not much of it at one time. Theres nothing in a burger that is any problem. The bun and ketchup are. You can remove the top bun or hollow out the top and bottom bun and basically just have a crust on your burger. If you want fries have a few after the burger, not before. If the burger is really big, split it in half and have the rest later. If you omit the bun, you can have a few more fries. I also found that thinner fries cause less of a spike than the same weight in bigger fries.
As for restaurant burgers, none compare to the ones I make at home so I rarely ever eat one out otherthan mickey d's
I have 2 within a reasonable drive in the MR2.
The last time I was there I had something new, mini crab cake burgers, very good. Sweet potato chips too, and I prefer them to fries taste wise as well as them being more BG friendly.
The one I frequent usually has some solo live acoustic guitar music going on as well.
It doesn't hurt to be a parrothead either.
Now, if they would only put Conch on the menu.:captain:

Hello there...I'm Type 2 and controlling with diet and exercise...and I eat cheeseburgers a couple times a week (not good with all of the fat I know - but it doesn't make my sugars rise). I also eat out about 5 days a week for lunch. What I do is take my own low carb torillas with me and order the bacon cheeseburger without the bun. I also don't eat tomato or onion (don't even want those tiny bits of sugar) so I put a ton of lettuce, pickles and mustard and gobble it down. I've lost a great deal of weight and when I stopped overdosing on carbs I lost the addiction to them. I don't miss fries or any other carb for that matter (although I have fond memories) and I will substitute steamed broccoli for my side. YUMMY. I also take the tortillas into Mexican restuarants.
If we ever get a chance to meet...I'll be the gal with a baggie full of tortillas!!! :D
I can give you some other lower carb ideas if you want to send a PM. I've lost 100 pounds and I eat a lot of food...and...I eat out a lot.

For anyone who goes I reccomend the sweet potato chips rather than the fries, they're alot easier to handle.

I'm reading this a bit late...I'm a little tickled that taking insulin enables me to "get away with" eating food! Insulin is just the best and most efficient way to lower blood glucose...it's what our bodies would normally use. We just have to be a little more creative in how we get it into our bodies...and the timing.
Pills aren't insulin. They are very helpful to those who are capable of producing some insulin, but the difficulty comes in matching food (and food cravings) to the pill's ability to work.
I grew up on insulin and am now thankful I never had to struggle through the pill/food game. I know most people would think that insulin is the most "dramatic" and difficult...but in my case, it seems easier.

Dh and I finally tried Cheeseburger In Paradise...and it was wonderful! I took the bun off of the burger and only had a few fries..so it really didn't mess with my blood sugar. We'll definately be going again!

Oh! Someone mentioned In-and-Out Burgers in an earlier post! I am really missing California now! Those are the absolute best burgers in the world. I'm going to be craving burgers all day. I think you can order the In-n-Out Burgers without bread (for you low carbers)...served between lettuce, they are still good. There's a slang term for this...but I'm having a brain drain at the moment.

I have wanted to go to Cheeseburger in Paradise but like Bryan42 mentioned, the wait for the one (I guess there is only one) I know of is usually 1-2 hours, weekends forget it. A friend who is a local food critic raves about them.
Of course I would go, eat all the things that are bad for me and then feel guilty!
Maybe someday...;)

So, are these owned by Jimmy Buffett? I know he sued a restaurant in Newport Beach, CA for using the name. (Don't know if he won, I moved)
I love Buffett, but his gift shops don't appeal to me much.

Has anyone here tried Five Guys?
They make killer burgers, and the fries just put me over the edge!
I can't wait to get my pump so I can eat there without my sugars going to 350!

I love a good burger...and I bolus Humalog for whatever carbs. Yet, since I really watch calories as much as carbs, I often order extra lettuce and make a lettuce bun. This is an old Weight Watcher's trick, but it helps me cut a few calories.
Also, I don't eat huge amounts of fries...or just don't eat them at all. But when the fries are calling...I tell the waitress to only bring me 5...no matter if they are big or small. If they are the huge steak fries (yum!), I've sometimes managed to only eat a couple of them. This takes a great deal of training, believe me! (I'm like a puppy that must go through a lifetime of puppy training!)
My new hometown has a gas station/greasy spoon spot that has some of the best burgers in the U.S. Lucky me. They have nice bright red tomatoes that you don't find in most states...but, I guess the good tomato days will be over soon.
Also, I often will just eat half a burger. That's too many calories for me to blow in a meal with an entire burger. So, I satisfy the craving, but don't eat all the calories & carbs.

I have a 5 guys just down the street from me. My little one raved about it. I saw their menu and have no desire to go there, Way too many processed carbs and too much fat in the burgers.
Besides, I make a better burger than any of them and no fries.
Mickey D's are about the only fries I still eat. A few out of their smallest package if I have someone to share them with. As I convert non diabetic people over to the Dark (diabetic) side, I get less taker on the fries.

For those ofyou who have never been to 5 Guys, here's the rundown:
Everything is fresh, nothing is frozen
Everything is cooked to order, the burgers are cooked on a griddle which keeps them nice and moist
A regular burger is actually a double weighing about 1/2 lb pre-cooked
A "little" is a single weighing in at a 1/4 lb pre-cooked
You tell them what you want on it
The fries are the best, just potatoes that are washed, cut and fried in peanut oil, and tossed with a little salt
The fry portions are huge! a small can easily feed two and a large will feed a small army.
And don't forget the peanuts while you are waiting for your order.
The 5 Guys a few miles from my house is my downfall.

My burger & fries adventure (type 2): in the nearly two years since I was diagnosed, I had not had a burger & fries -- until last week. I had taken a day off from work, I knew I was going on a 7-8 mile hike immediately after lunch, and so I figured what the heck, let's see how I handle a "Double Double" from In and Out Burger, with small fries, and an unsweetened iced tea.
The burger was yummy, if a little sweet (a "double double" is somewhat similar to a Big Mac, but it has no middle bun, and thicker and tastier cheese). The fries were fine -- they're not processed, like at most fast food joints -- just sliced potatoes tossed in salt. The hike was very nice -- this was just before Southern California caught fire.
My readings: at two hours (and I had hiked the entire time, for a good portion of the time quite uphill) my bg/dl was 148 -- higher than I had hoped for, given the amount of activity that followed the meal, but OK considering that the burger had 1,000 island dressing on it (I think -- it really did taste sweet) and I had ketchup with the fries. Out of curiosity, I checked half an hour later, and registered 180 bg/dl! I guess there really was a lot of fat in the burger, but geez, doesn't exercise count for anything? I tested a few minutes later (different fingers each time), and this time was down in the 160s. At 2 hours and 45 minutes, I was down to 122, and stopped the experiment.
So I guess every two years, it's OK to indulge in a burger and fries, so long as I'm willing to exercise all afternoon, but this really was a reminder for me that even though I'm generally careful about what I eat and am fairly active, I can't eat like I folks with a functioning pancreas. Next time -- guess that will be 2009 -- I'll try the "no bun" approach and see what happens.

Labob, I would not sweat it either. The only thing I'd eliminate is the ketchup, there is a lot of corn syrup in there and with the fries, you can go much higher. Did you eat the burger first? That wat you get the fat in processing and the carbs later. It could jhave been the sauce on the burger. Try next time you hike, the same meal with a couple of mods and see where you go.
