Why would you want to get it up a bit? Unless, of course, it's a result of averaging extreme highs and lows. My endocronologist considers 4.8 to be perfect so it sounds to me as though you're doing well.

Why would you want to get it up a bit?

Many articles and much debate about Diabetics being below 5.5.
Apparently research is indicating that below 5.4 means you may, M-A-Y, be having too many lows which can lead to

1. insensitivity to lows--very dangerous

2. brain damage---not so good either

there seems to be much new knowledge on the horizon because more people are keeping their B/Gs lower than ever before thanks to all the new types of devices that are more effective in keeping track of B/Gs coupled with newer insulins and delivery devices

Jared and Diabetic-Canada, congrats on the decreasing A1c's!! Fantastic!

Mine was 6.7 in March, up a bit from pre-pump days. I like for it to sit at about 5.0%, anything significantly less and I feel like a zombie. Plus the risk of hypo insensitivity.

That's why I acknowledged that it's not good if it's due to extremes of highs and lows. I haven't been on this forum long enough to know whether lgvincent keeps his blood sugars in a narrow range or not. If he does, I still say his A1C is pretty close to perfect.

My last one was 5.3, I go towards the end of the month for my next visit, so we will see what happens. Hopefully stays the same or up just slightly.

Yeah, I feel awesome, never felt better in my life...Although, that may also be due to the fact that right now I am loving life, and everything seems to be going great...

I definately feel better when my numbers are lower...

Congrats on your lower numbers, Diabetic-Canada! :)

Just saw the doc today and the results of the blood test I had
2 days ago show my A1C went down to 5.8. It was around 8
when I was Dx'd in Jan. 2004. (I have T2). Also, my thyroid TSH level is now normal, and my LDL is also normal.

The triglycerides are still a bit high, and I need to get the HDL higher, but the doc is not too worried about these 2 items.

I lost 19 pounds. WOOOHOOO!!!!

My last A1C was 6.6 as well. I am not so sure how the next one is going to be...I have a bad feeling that it's going to be worse, especially with the numbers I have been seeing lately. I certainly hope not, but even if things have changes for the worse it will sort of motivate me to work harder. ..at least I hope so.

Lowest number ever: 5.9.

Usually I'm in the low to mid 6's.

Well, just one reading since I was fully into the routine, and it was 5.4 (about a month ago). I think I'm still in that ballpark, but I have a sneaking suspicion that my meter reads 10% or so high, so it's hard for me to be totally sure (that's the only way a 5.4 makes sense considering the daily readings I was getting before that. I fully expected a 6.4)

My last A1C was 5.3, which sounds pretty good except that it was up from 4.8 three months earlier. I knew the reason (I'd been pigging out on peanut butter), and I have a bet on with my doctor that I'll have it back down to five or less next time. So the peanut butter, alas, has been banned. I'm going for another test tomorrow, so we shall see whether my sacrifice has paid off or not.

My last one was 7.4, due the results of another one on Tuesday. My lowest ever was 5, but I was having lows all the time at that point. The doctor told me that research showed that at 6% people tend to be having about 3 bad hypos a year. Is this anyones experience?

Depends on what is considered bad. Like, really shakey and clammy? Or passing out and/or seizures? I've never passed out but I've been incoherent and had seizures. I had about 7 of those episodes in one year, for the first time, after having been diabetic for 11 years. Thankfully now I'm off the N and not having it happen anymore. I've always figured I'd eventually have an episode like that, just not so many in such a short period of time.

6.5 was my last A1c. I am not sure I can get it much lower without having to many lows. I don't know how you guys do it.

My last a1c, 3 weeks ago, was 6.6. In the past 6 or 8 years, I have been as low as 6.2, and as high as 7.4, so mid-6's is just about where I should be, where I feel safe and comfotable, and where my doctor wants me to be--keeps everyone happy, and seems to have kept the boogeyman away.

Hello all
I normally have my A1C at 5.9, where it has been for the past near three years.
But since I had to raise my levels to regain sensation of my lows, my last A1C was at 6.1. This is a little high for me, but I am comfortable with this.
Also my sensation of lows has come back and boy that feeling is somewhat uncomfortable after not sensing it for so long.
But I feel better with the normalcy returned.

Eri's lowest A1C was 8.1...they want her between 7.0 and 8.

We go in July again and will have it tested then.

Eri's had quite a few hypo's in the past...a LOT of seizures...that was 3 months after being dx'd and up til last year(she was dx'd in 1/00).

Thanks soremom and Lorna.

Lorna, In response to your question about hypos, I've had 1 "bad" hypo so far. I didn't pass out or anything but I was shaking and sweating like crazy and I didn't feel that I could walk anymore after going to grab some glucose tabs out of my car. I learned the hard way that a regular bolus and pizza don't mix very well. ;) .

I do tend to stay at the low side of "normal" most of the time but I've had my moments in the 200 + range.

LauRa....the A1c test is a blood test that returns your average blood glucose level over the last 120 days by measuring the amount of glucose stuck to the red blood cells. Some studies now indicate it is weighted more towards the last 4-6 weeks, though.

My last A1c was 5.7.

My last one on May 17th was 6.2. Been a diabetic for about 11 years now and happy to say that my overall 11 year average is about 6.6. When I was on Lantus (the devil), I had a A1C of 5.5 but felt like ****. I can live with HA1C's in the low 6's.

Mine started at 7.8 back in September, went to 7.5 for December and February.

Now it's at 7.0 and hopefully still coming down. :-)

The doctor at least seems to be happy with my current diet/exercise/herbal regime.

I know I’ve seen somewhere where it breaks down what the #'s are. Like 100-200 is 9 and 200 to 300 is 10.... can someone post those numbers again. Please and thanks in advance.

Jared, here's a conversion chart from A1c to average daily glucose,

A1c__________mg/dL__________mmol/L
12.0% ---------- 345 ------------- 19.5
11.0% ---------- 310 ------------- 17.5
10.0% ---------- 275 ------------- 15.5
9.0% ---------- 240 ------------- 13.5
8.0% ---------- 205 ------------- 11.5
7.0% ---------- 170 -------------- 9.5
6.0% ---------- 135 -------------- 7.5
5.0% ---------- 100 -------------- 5.5
4.0% ----------- 65 -------------- 3.5

Keep in mind these are rounded numbers; the calculation is A1c=BG+77.3/35.6
