How many family members in your family have diabetes? How far back does it run in the genes?

I'm 14 and have been diabetic for 8 years now.

My dad, 45 and diabetic since age of 25.

My paternal grandfather, 83, diabetic and stubborn... diabetic since age 40~.

No one on my mothers side is known for diabetes, no one else on my fathers side known for diabetes.

My son is Type 1 diagnosed at age 13. My brother, age 50, is Type 1, diagnosed at age 28. Two of my mother's uncles were also Type 1. That is as far back as we can track it. Also, my husband's grandmother was Type 1.

I was dx'ed type 1 at age 32. There is no one in my family on either side who has ever had type 1.

I am type 2 Dx'ed 15 years ago (I'm 68). Both my mother and her sister were type 2s. None of us were grossly overweight - I'm about 15 lbs heavier than I was in high school.

I was diagnosed Type 1 at 21 and there was no family background of diabetes at all. One of our daughtyers also has it, having been diagnosed at 17.

I was diagnosed at 48 with Type I (16 years ago now). No one in my family had either Type I or Type II. I am the first.

Oops--said that wrong--12 years ago. I know several people who have it and there was never any that they knew of in the family.

I was just diagnosed in May with Type II. My mom's mom and dad both died from diabetes complications and 8 of their 12 kids have had severe complications and some have died with complications of diabetes. Both of their parents were diabetic. If I am not mistaken, they were all Type I.

I don't know how I skirted it as long as I did, but I just found out I have Type II this May and all 4 of my kids are good, for now. I test them sometimes for my own satisfaction of knowing they are ok, especially the older ones who are 18 and 23.

Diabetes has been a killer in my Mom's family for as long as I can remember. And I had gestational diabetes with all 4 of my kids, so it was inevitable for me, I am told.

My Grandad had type 2 diabetes, he died when I was 4 and two of my uncles are type 2.

Two of my Grandma's brothers (my Mum's uncles) were type 1, both died of complications d/t diabetes.

I have had this now for 36 years and just in the last 2 years my father now has type 2 and now i fear that my only sister may contract type 2 too that i know of and dare i say they may be more. :( I have an aunt who may have type 2 and my late uncle has type 2.
It seems that the 20th century disease and getting worse.
Perhaps just treading water and just keeping afloat. :(

Diagnosed with type 1 in 1974, no diabetes what so ever in family then or now.

My two lads are 24 and 20 and have so far escaped it (touch wood)

hi tavani, welcome to your new DF family ;-)

i was diagnosed aged 38 years old with type 1. my mum has insulin resistance that causes her to have reactive hypoglycaemia. my great granny apparently had type 1. so its definately genetic in my case.

Pre-diabetic as far back as 1980. I`ve spent my life 10-15 lbs. overweight even in the army. Mom was Native American and diabetic, maternal grandma was diabetic late in her life. 1 sister diabetic since she was 46 now 60 and type 2 on insulin for 14 years, another sister type 2 for 11 years on pills and me type 2 on insulin. 1 sister and a brother appear to have avoided diabetes to this point. I`m convinced genetics plays a major role.

My mom -- dx'd type 1 at age 17 (40 years ago)
My son -- dx'd type 1 at 9 months old (Mother's day, 2001)
Myself -- dx'd type 1 at age 30 (June, 2007)
Maternal Grandpa -- dx'd type 2 (christmas, 2002) I personally wonder if he has type 1.5 -- pills didn't work and now he's on insulin. But very very overweight and otherwise a typical type 2 profile.

my mother was type 1
father type 2
me type 1
sister type 2
and two uncles type 2
I only know one of my cousins so who knows if any of them have it.

none of my grandparents had diabetes that I know of, prior to that if anyone had diabetes I doubt it was recorded since my mother was dx'd soon after insulin was discovered and before that people just died from it. "natural causes" and all. ;)

Me and my brother both have it (both type 1), don't really know anymore of my family history to know if others had it...

Well my grandfather had it, My mom got it when she was on her 40s, now it's my turn. The odd thing is the Endo noticed that my thyroid is slightly hyper, well my mom's is too. I am willing to bet that a hyeractive thyroid is the root cause of the metabolic syndrome that leads TYPE II.

Welcome and good luck, just keep the number good and you
will be fine!
