i take humalog and lantus. i take the lantus big shot am and then a booster at night. i used to take a couple of units of humalin u and then i had good am fasting sugars. but they discontinued humalin u. so i slowly increased my night lantus from 3 units to now 7 units yet i still have high am readings. this morning it was like 250. i can't see the endo until oct. so i need to get this straightened out,any suggestions?

My endo is booked up for months at a time also, but they are always willing and actually encourage calling in or sending BG readings so they can tweak things in between appointments. I would give them a call with the readings and if you continue to be out of control they may try to get you in earlier.
Good luck!

I think you are doing the right thing in adjusting your lantus on your own. I have found that when I am a bit high at bed time, I take a bit of humalog and that brings things down so AM is right on.
I have never seen an endo, and have been t1 for 6 years longer than you. Step out and do whatcha gotta do - carefully, and with the best knowledge of experience that you can attain - diabetesforums is a great resource, I think. I learned here at DF to do my 24 units of lantus at breakfast so that I don't have lows at 3AM. I hate 3AM lows.

You can replace the Humulin U with Humulin N (NPH). It is still available and even better at controlling morning blood sugars than Humulin U. The problem with Lantus is that, because it doesn't have much of a peak, it isn't much good for controlling the DP. If you incrementally increase night time Lantus until morning BG is how you want it, you could find that you are getting too much Lantus action during the rest of the day. My suggestion is to replace the night time Lantus with Humulin N. Good luck . ;)

i asked the endo about adding a few night units of nph and he said that was'nt a good idea,he said he would rather increase the lantus, but i've noticed that i'm having afternoon low's and blackouts lately,i'm going to new a family practice dr on the 28th so i'm going to ask about it. because i have hypo unawareness and with school starting next week i can't have afternoon lows because i have to pick up josh my son from school.
