Recently a neighbor was telling me that Halle Berry has diabetes. Being the researcher that I am:- I googled it, and sure enough she does. She had passed out (ignored the warning signs) and was in a 7day coma. She was dx'd in 89. WAs wondering if you know of some other celebs that had it? It seems that when celebs come down with chronic diseases, they raise alot of funds from having charity events...which is a good thing.

Here's a few famous ones close to me....

Jonathan Hayes - Cincinnati Bengals Tight Ends Coach
~Hayes use to play for the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers and wrote his own book on diabetes and sports, very good book....Necessary Toughness: Facing Defenses and Diabetes (Paperback) is the book and it was published in 1993 but no longer made. I have a copy and it's a great book for any sports person.

Jay Leeuwenburg - Former Bengals Offensive Lineman

Mike Echols - Tennessee Cornerback

Tony Dungy - Colts Head Coach

For those of you who recall the Spice Girls, Mel C's brother is diabetic (T1), he is moderatly famous in his own right as a race car driver in the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship).

When diagnosed in 2004 he had his licence to race suspended, it was granted back for the 06 season. Another example of there being no reason for this disease to hold anyone back.

Halle Berry has a pump? Thought she was type 2?

I heard Halle Berry was type1 but eats such a strict diet that she doesn't need insulin. Is that true?

Lorna
11-18-2006, 01:39 PM
I don't think that's possible. If she has been type 1 since 1989, there is no way she is producing insulin at all. In that case, even without carbs she would go into ketoacidocis.

Are you guys sure she's (Halle Berry) a type one? I can see this has been talked about a lot... but I don't know eh...

There's a random New Zealand Cricketer with type one, can't remember his name though!

I'm pretty certain she's T2 (though I know she doesn't fit the typical T2 profie)... In a "People" magazine interview, I think she stated this and how she's diet controlling it.

Two individuals who I am inspired by are Will Cross (Mountaineer/Adventurer with T1) and Gary Hall Jr. (Olympic swimmer with T1)

Halle Berry has at times said she's a Type 1 and sometimes said she's a Type 2. I did read that article where she said she didn't have to take insulin because she did diet and herbs. Then later I read a different article where she talked about having to take insulin on the set. Last month I saw a new article that says she's a Type 1. Who really knows, I guess. It sounds like even she may not know.

Some people have speculated that she has the rare form of diabetes called Type 1b. I guess it's possible. People with that sometimes have to take insulin but then at other times they don't. Kind of like a cycle.

Halle Berry is a Type 1 since 1989. I bought a Diabetes magazine last
week with the 2 page article about her.

I believe Patti LaBelle is a Type 2.

Why does it matter if she is a Type 1 or 2 if she has a pump? I am a Type 2 and I am trying to get the pump!!

:thrasher: Tommy Lee, George Lucas,

Tommy Lee is unconfirmed. Sounds more like a rumour as that has been around for years. He's more likely to have Hep C and the rumour went from their to D.

George Lucas? Not too sure. What the heck does this mean (from wikipedia)?:

"He was later drafted by the Army, but tests showed he had diabetes, the disease that killed his paternal grandfather. Lucas was prescribed medication for the disease, but his symptoms are sufficiently mild that he does not require insulin and would not be considered diabetic under the disease's current classification"

Sounds like nothing to me.

I'm not sure if there was already a thread similar to this - I am still somewhat new to the site and would take me years to read though all the threads.

I wanted to start this thread for people to post famous people with diabetes. I find it sometimes inspirational to read about some of these people and how they have not let Diabetes stop them from doing what they do or living their dreams.

I thought about doing this after watching Golf over the weekend. One of the announcers mentioned that Scott Verplank was Type 1 - and has been since the age of 9. I immediately jumped on google and learned a lot about this individual who never let Diabetes stop him from doing what he wanted to do.

If you know someone in the public eye with Type 1 or 2 please shrare.

Bret Michaels...I consider him an inspiration. This recent article is really really great IMO.

Bret Michaels, Diabetic Lead Singer of "Poison," Lives Life Large - Diabetes Health (http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/2007/06/07/5244.html)

I've seen him in concert many times and I have always wondered about those solo spots as these guys are great for writing sexy pop songs but otherwise are NOT great instrumentalists...he finally puts it all into perspective. The whole concert is basically set up for him to be able to do his thing/show and maintain great D control.

We had a previous thread on celebs with Diabetes, so just merged the two together. :) It's interesting just how many celebs do have Diabetes, but how little folks hear from them about it sometimes. :s:

Actress Jean Smart is Type I, I believe. Starred in Designing Women and played a wonderful, tortured First Lady in "24" year before last.

I think many film celebrities downplay diabetes (with exception of Mary Tyler Moore and a few others)...the whole celebrity PR machine and studio liability contracts/insurance and such.

Same problem many of us have with our own careers at times. Sports celebrities seem to be more open. There is still a social stigma regarding diabetes, unfortunately, which only hurts the education of others.

1) Elliott Yamin
2) Kevin Corvais

I think they are both Type I's.

I was going to post about Elliott. I really like him. He is also deaf in one ear. He wears a pump. I love his voice and the first song from his CD.

HEY....whatta bout me??
First in the state of Washington allowed to roadrace motorcycles as a diabetic. Also competed in national WERA events, Highest placed 4th in a WERA National at Portland :T

My Dr was vital in getting me waived to compete....if it wasn't for him I would have never been allowed to race in ANY events...he really went to bat for me. I had to retire in 1994 after 12 eye surgeries and loosing most of my periphrial (sp) vision
