a freind of mine who has some medical problems but not diabetes says she passes out because of low blood sugar. Being a diabetic i automatically disagree and say it has to be something else. I've heard of normal people haveing low blood sugars...but passing out? no way. I thought that the only reason why diabetics pass out and go into comas is because they have drastically too much artificial insulin in their system and the liver just can't keep up.
my doctor also told me this is incredibally rare for a non-diabetic
She also doesnt have the classic symtoms of being low before she passes out. No confusion, no beligerence, just thunk..passed out.
Health wise i try and tell her its most likly not low blood sugar but she doesnt listen.
Anyone know more than me that could convince her?

Actually yes it is possible because my brother has that happen to him and i used to have to give him peanut butter cups or some bread to bring his sugar up and my cousin as well. i know its weird because these arent diabetics but its possible.

so these 2 people used to "pass out?" from it. I find it hard because about 30 or so times i forgot to eat and bolused and never even came close to passing out in my life. and one time i took 6 units... no food, i had a bg of 100 before and 65 after.... AND AFTER 6 units coursing through my body...just seems impossible for a non-diabetic based on my experiences

My aunt was dx'ed as having hypoglocemia after passing out numerous times from low blood sugar. It can happen...but if I were your friend I would see a doctor to make absolutely certain that it wasn't something else.

The reason you pass out is because your brain runs on glucose, if there isn't enough glucose to run your brain you pass out, or worse... natural or artificial insulins have nothing to do with it, although I do agree with your doc. it would be rare and very unlikely low blood glucose is the cause.

My sister, we believe, suffers from hypoglycemia. Her family doctor says not but I'm trying to get her to go to my endo and find out. She's never passed out but has come extremely close to it. I believe it is possible.

no no no they never did pass out however they did have low bs's that is a fact because there are non diabetics that have lows and highs, ive been a diabetic for 21 yrs and know that it has happened to many others but the passing out thats another story, thats defenitly something different but she could still have lows.

i think a diabetic that really is a diabetic sorta speak, can pass out and im sure there are diabetics that have with lows i never did and ive been as low as 19 and the other day it was 29 but a non diabetic i dont think can but like i said earlier, if shes having lows then yes it may be a possibility. anythings possible but ive never herd of anyone doing so with diabeties.

Long before I had diabetes I would pass out from hypos all the time.

I believe that's exactly what hypoglycemia is, and yes, I've always heard you can be diagnosed with that alone.

I have a niece that is hypoglycemic, but is not diabetic. She has passed out several times over the last couple of years. I gave her one of my meters and she tests herself when she's feeling shakey.

I should qualify this. I passed out a few times, but I had hypos all the time.

It is possible, but what you describe could also be explained by a sudden drop in blood pressure. For example, I have a condition where under certain conditions, my blood pressure will drop and it causes me to pass out. Many times, there really wasn't any warning. A more common form is for people to pass out when they stand up.

lilituc- actually that sounds like a probable to me. it fits well with the fact that she doesnt have any classic symtoms of hypergycemia before passing out. that was the one mind bender that didn't make sense at all....your explainations sounds much more like what she goes through..
thanks for the responses.

I passed out while stopped at a traffic light and when the abulance got there my bg registered lo which I think they said was under 11mg/dl, but I have also driven around town and tested when I got home and came up 12mg/dl with little or no symptoms.

i have tested my wife a few times when she was tired and felt strange and was in the low 50's a couple times. Her doctor says she has hypoglycemia tendencies and to eat at regular intervals. So i guess it could go lower.

My mom has suffered from hypoglycemia. Though she hasn't passed out from it, she gets shaky & says it makes her feel like she's going to pass out.
My trainer yesterday stated that she suffered a low blood sugar just a couple of days prior to our meeting. She was on the way to her work site & while on the road, she suddenly got "tunnel vision." She literally had to look sideways to see the car/driver (officer :s: ) next to her. She pulled over & called her husband (an optometrist). He thought it was a migraine. After she felt a little more comfortable & was able to drive to her work site, she tested her BG and was 65. Now, while that may not seem too low, her body clearly reacted to it.
She's pregnant, so I asked her if she possibly has gestational Diabetes. She took a glucose tolerance test, and from the sounds of it, she may be.
At any rate, passing out or even just going low can happen, regardless of whether or not a person has Diabetes.

My sister had hypoglycemia years ago and passed out several times. She stayed on a very strict diet and no longer has it. She ate no startches and lots of proteins.
