I've recently seen alot of foods that are supposedly "carb friendly" which are for people on the atkins and south beach diet. On their products, they break down the carbs to give you the NET CARBS. Should I look at the total carbs or go by the net? I've always heard that if you have more that 5g of Fiber, you can subtract it from total carbs. But I never heard of subtracting anything else. I came across pasta last night that said it had only 5 grams of digestible carbs. I was a little hesitant about buying it. Here is the website for this pasta, tell me what you guys think.

Basically, it's best to stick with the "official" nutrition information found on the government label (aside from the fiber thing you already know about). A fair amount of "net carbs" is just hype. There is no consistant standard used to determine what a "net carb" is, and sometimes it's that they have subtracted out the sugar alcohols. They are wierd, but some of them do affect BG, so you don't want to remove them either. (they also can have funky effects on your digestive tract).

I've seen the dreamfields pasta, and got a box, haven't tried it yet. Mendosa likes the stuff (not sure I always "buy" what he says. Some day I'll probably make a small portion, and then see what it does to me.

"Protected Carbs" - thats a new one on me. The website reads like they have done clinical studies to determine what the "digestible carbs" amount is.

Interesting to say the least. I won't believe it until I try it. Ashtur let us know what you think.

The only carbs to count are the total per serving, less 5 gms+ of fiber. The glycerin and sugar alcohols still count for us lucky diabetics.

I was told by my CDE not to pay any attention to "net carbs" and to just look at "total carbs" Also, some people have digestive problems with too much of the sugar alcohols.

I usually go by the total carbs. If I subtract anything, it will only be the fiber. Sometimes sugar alcohols bother people, sometimes they don't. So to be safe I always count them.

I was told by my Dr. to go by total carbs and the subtraction for the fiber for every 5gms, also. It seems that the works for me. I would be afraid to go be "net carbs" if it is less than total carbs that I would go to high.

Yes, me too. And I won't gamble on my feet. toes, etc. until I get better information from somebody who has done research on Diabetics.

I agree with everyone. Deduct fiber and not the sugar alcohol. Jack and I did a 2 day course on diabetes last week and I asked the CDE about the net carb thing with the sugar alcohol. She said not to deduct it. She feels it is a disservice to everyone, not just diabetics.

I think it is just hype too. Man, I wish the food industry wouldn't play with our minds this way! Who knows what kind of damage they are doing til someone stops and says....hey wait....we made a mistake!

Ack.
