Reading some of the rave reviews here from pumpers and MDI-protocol users alike on Apidra, I asked my endo to prescribe me some two days ago. He agreed and gave me two vials as samples. So I loaded up the Apidra yesterday in my pump, and noticed my sugars seemed a bit higher according to the CGMS, but I didn't worry too much about it as my Sensor was approaching its lifetime end...

But last night, after dinner, I could not get my sugars down below 180 even after multiple and increasingly large correction boluses, all of which should have over-corrected. I dialed up some NovoPen and fixed myself before bed.

I woke up relatively normal, but I noticed on the CGMS that I was increasing approaching waking hours...WTF, did I develop DP overnight?

I had to change my Sensor this morning, and went to meet a buddy for lunch. He wanted sushi, and I figured I could manage that since I eat it so often.

We ate, chatted, etc., and since I changed my Sensor less than two hours before, there was no CGMS to look at...But I *felt* okay. When lunch was done, I left and CGMS said "give me a blood sugar reading". So I checked...

326

Holy Fish Paste, Batman. I didn't have my NovoPen with me, so I over-corrected again since I know for a fact once I am that high, normal corrections don't work.

Long story short, I exceeded 400 today for the first time in recent memory...When I got home, I took almost 30 units of Novolog to kill the high (and Hi I'm Dan, I'm not suicidal, either :D ).

Later, I was back in range and I ate a small dinner, measured carbs, everything. Bolused as needed. And my sugars went up to 180...and have been there all night, sorta like last night.

724PM: 178

Bolus 2 units

819PM 168, not enough movement for me, so I bolus another 5 units to see if this Apidra stuff will do anything. By 854, I was up to 188.

So I swapped the reservoir with Novolog, flushed the tubing and reconnected with Novolog, and bolused 6 units at 8:59PM. 186 at the time of change/bolus.

at 929PM, I am at 158. I guess Apridra doesn't work for me...

Hey Duck,

Sorry to hear Apidra didn't work for you. :( It was ok for me, but I didn't like the physiological changes I seemed to be experiencing while on it (more pimples, having to urinate frequently, regardless of BGs, just as high of highs as on Humalog, etc.). I wound up getting on Novolog after a short time on Apidra.

Though I ultimately liked Humalog best (had been on it since 96), I'd still rather use Novolog than go to Apidra ever again. Even the endo who put me on Novolog was not keen on prescribing his patients Apidra, as he felt it was too new and didn't want his patients to be "guinea pigs." Some folks do well with it & that's fine....but each of us is different, so it won't work for all of us.

I think what helps people with humalog novolog is that is stays in the system longer.......I dunno, I was gonna try it, but I have done well now on the pump with humalog, I thought I might need a change, but now since I am finally getting it.....I'll stick with what I am used too

Sorry such a rough experience that sucks......well it was only one day.....

Yeah, I was going to try and "tough it out" one more day, but I've become too much of a control freak lately to allow myself that luxury. And also, the >400 after sushi today...I've not had an issue like that for a while, and I have eaten MUCH more sushi than I had today.

If the stuff worked for a shorter period, though, I should have seen its effects at least immediately, right? It was like it wasn't working much, if at all, for me. I dunno, it's mystifying.

Dewey, if I had broken out more, TRUST ME that would be enough to make me quit. I break out like a 13 year old anyway. ;)

You must have some sort of resistance to Apidra. Strange. I certainly know the feeling of being over 400 and wanting to bolus my entire cartridge, though that hasn't happened in a few months.

For me, Apidra sucked... (In all the wrong ways )

I had problems with it at first, like you describe duck. Now, though, it seems to be working fine. Its as if I had an initial resistance or immune response to it.

Wow, that's too bad, duck. I can't believe you had to take that much Novolog to correct the problems, that sounds awful. Disappointing I'm sure, you think you're trying out some fabulous new drug and it turns out to be terrible. It's so amazing how differently we all react to the same product; I for one would never ever ever in my life give up my beloved Apidra. So interesting.

I agree. :D My experiment was just like yours duck, only I tried novolog.

Yeah, I remember reading that, Noel. Sorta freaked me out, actually.

It is indeed interesting how this stuff works for some of us, then not for others. Or varying degrees between...

If anyone is in Northern VA and would like a couple (one that is about 175 u empty) vials of Apidra, holler.
