For exercise, I generalliy will walk the malls or turn my cable tv to the disco station and will step to the music. I'm curious as to how the rest of you exercise.

I do a lot of different things Staceyy to keep it new. I walk my dogs 2.5 miles a night. I also have a trailer for my bike and take my little dogs on a bike ride. We do hills which is tough when you are dragging 40 pounds behind you. I like to rollerblade, kayak and I also watch stupid tv while riding my recumbant bike. I geocache (haven't gone in awhile) which requires hiking. (high tech treasure hunting with a GPS).
I like to have fun when I exercise.

I think that anything that gets you up and moving is exercise. I go to the gym 3 days a week and walk on the treadmill for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Then I have 5 weight machines that I use and have gradually increased the weights over the past few months. I can really tell the difference when I increase those weights. I also take a Zumba class once a week as I love it......I laugh the whole hour as my body just doesnt move that way but it sure is fun to try (www.zumba.com). When I can't get to the gym I have a recumbent bike and a small treadmill at my house so I'll use them. I also walk my dog, walk around my building at lunch, take stairs instead of elevators, etc. Anything to move my body, lower my BGs, and burn some calories.
Good luck with whatever you do! Have fun!
p.s. When I really don't feel like hitting the gym I remind myself that my mother had her first stroke at age 49 and she's been disable every since. She'd GIVE ANYTHING to be able to walk or run or climb stairs like I can do now. If I don't want the same thing to happen to me I have to keep moving. That usually overrides whatever lazy excuse I can come up with. You see....I'm 46 now and strokes run in my family. I'm fighting hard to prevent that and I really believe exercise is the key to doing that :elefant:

I try to walk 3 miles a day. I hate running and my knees hat running even more. If the weather is bad, I walk on the treadmill at the health club.

I walk for 30 minutes almost every day, and have 17 or so horses which keep me busy. Some of them are worked (by me) for shows and that is work for me as well as them...

I run 3 or 4 times week right now as I'm preparing to run the half-marathon in November.
Being down with a broken leg at the start of the year, that got me working on improving my upper body strength. Most of that is done with pull ups, chin ups, and push ups. I have a few dumbbells along with a couple of sledgehammers, and some old freeweights that I can stick in a backpack to add weight to the various types of pull ups, chin ups and push ups.
I've made some fairly significant gains in strength over the past 8 months and spread out over the day on Friday was able to do 100 pull ups with no significant fatigue the next day.
Being as physically active as I've become has made for generally better control and a lot more enjoyment of this thing called life.

Hi stacy
I have a walk each day and keep active around the house. I used to go to a gym but I've been so ill the last two years I don't have the energy for that at the moment. But as long as you keep active I don't think it matters to much what type of excersise you do.

Walking to the fridge to get more iced-tea, walking to the tv to switch the box from tv to dvd, or back to tv. :D

Start work early weekdays and the meal break is at 9:45am for half an hour so I get up and walk around the streets for that half hour - amazing how invigorated you feel when you get back to your office.
Go to the gym for weight training 3 day a week (benched 145 kilos earlier this year) plus have a fitball at home that I sit on and do stuff with small dumbells at the computer. Ride a pushbike a few days a week to do stuff like go to the video store or get some milk from the shop.
Have 3 or 4 grandchildren come around at weekends so taking them to the park and going for little walks with them also adds to the exercise. And now spring is here nearly time to head back to the beach swimming.
Just trying to stay active and variety helps break it up a bit
Hi Staceyy...exercise was a struggle for me initially so I got a personal trainer so then I knew I would exercise. I would see her twice a week and then either swim laps or do water aerobics. I now attend a 'pump' class at the YWCA which is strength training and toning and I still have my trainer typically once a week. I really like that little bit of extra motivation she provides. I however continue to be the gym dork as it takes me a few tries to get the exercise right :nerd:. Seems my mind-body connection disconnects from time to time.

I take my dog for a really long walk every evening after supper...but I had to shorten it a bit over the last few weeks as the heat was too much for her. I also do an aerobic workout at least 3x a week for 30 minutes...working towards doing it 5x a week, and increasing it to an hour.
I think the important thing is finding what works for you, what you will like doing, and won't mind sticking with it. It took me a while to find what was right for me, but once I did I found sticking to it to be fairly easy.

Staceyy,
I spend 30 minutes on the treadmill each morning before breakfast (6 days/week - I take Saturday off to do chores). Also, I alternate days either free weights or doing some situps and pushups.
It doesn't sound like much but it seems like plenty to me. My 50 YO legs don't recover like they did 30 years ago.

turn my cable tv to the disco station and will step to the music.
Try DDR (dance dance revolution). That has always gotten me low and it's actually pretty fun. LOL For daily exercise I play tennis.

I worrked hard on my treadmill during the winter to strengthen my leg muscles. In the early spring I started walking outdoors. I walked only one mile per day at first. I am 67 and I cannot jog because of bad knees and some arthritis. By the end of the spring I was walking three miles in one hour. I always choose a route with some hills. I do this every day , weather permitting. I have lost 8 pounds and one inch in my waist. I still need to lose 31 more pounds. I realize I should exercise my upper body too but I have a back problem and I have carpal tunnel problems in my hands and wrists.

Richard157, have you looked into a water strength training program? I too have a back issue, and thought I couldn't lift. 4 months of water workout and I now lift in the gym 3 times a week, and my back is better than it's been in years.
I lift 3 times a week, with 25 minutes of elliptical. On the other days, I usually do 30-40 minutes of aerobics on recumbent bike or treadmill. Unless I can tell the office off and go hiking :)
I've dropped nearly 50 lbs, improved my diabetes, and feel good. I still have some more to lose, but I find I'm actually enjoying doing it.

Hi! I'm new here, a T1 on a MM522 pump. I'm on my feet 8 hrs a day, then M-W-F I go to the gym to use the eliptical, bike, or run/walk on the treadmill. I'm only there about 30-40 minutes because I'm anxious to get home! Sometimes in the evening we walk the dog for about only a mile or so.
Mary
Walk, usually with one of the dogs.
Use my home gym to work out various muscle groups.
Yard work, grass mowing is good!

Walk the dog 1 1/4 miles early morning every day.
Curves circuit 3x a week.
Karate class 2-3x a week.
When my home office is remodeled in late September, I will also have an elliptical in there (for those long, boring conference calls, heh heh!)

I keep moving just about all the time. I do lots of yard work about 6 months out of the year & clean my own house and work my 2 jobs (no kids, but VIPets). If I don't move enough, I can't unstick my sore joints! I used to sit at a computer a lot more than I do now -- I blame that keyboard for almost wrecking my right shoulder!
I physically act much younger than I am, which keeps me in better shape.

For the last two months every other day I've been doing a full 90 min workout at the gym and 30 mins of cardio on the eliptical.
On the days that I don't do a complete workout it's any where from 40-60 minutes of cardio.
On the weekends I do a little mounain biking or sailing.
In two months I've dropped my body fat down to less than 19%, and I'm working on getting it down to 15%. At the same time I've gained 8 lbs of muscle mass. I'm actually looking better in shorts!
But this winter it's all about the snow!
Mike
My favorite exercise is running and I try to go for a 5k 4-5 times a week. I also like to swim and bike. I might train for a triathlon next year:cool:
I like to do a lot of other things like kayaking, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, etc. I also love hiking especially where there are beautiful mountains, but there are none around where I live:(

Has anyone tried Pilates? My Mum does it weekly and is supposed to be great for building up strength between the muscles and bones.

running on my treadmill mostly these days and lifting free weights. Do forms on Sundays and have been meaning to take advantage of my schools pool cause I love to swim.
Does sex count as exercise? Rephrase; is it ok to post sex as exercise? Cause it is! Sweet sweet exercise lol.

I've made some fairly significant gains in strength over the past 8 months and spread out over the day on Friday was able to do 100 pull ups with no significant fatigue the next day.
As a follow up to this, Monday evening without having done any early in the morning, I did 150 pulls ups over a number of sets during the evening after work.
I also tested my pulling ability with just my right arm, started from a point with the right arm slightly bent and was nearly able to pull myself and my chin all the way up over the bar. So I'm getting very close to my first one arm chin up, just need a bit more of pull at the top and the ability to start it from a dead straight armed hang at the bottom. I've worked very hard for this and it's exciting to be getting this close to doing it.

I really need to back into my exercise regime. I am sooo out of shape at the moment. Think I'll start with a small 5 mile walk tomorrow afternoon see how it goes. Its gonna be real hard work getting back to where I was 4 months ago.
Good news on the pull ups Scratch. Man they are hard work.
Sex is proberbly the most fun you will have exercising apart from surfing.

I started swimming again and love it. Many have commented on my weight loss. My condo has an indoor lap pool so why not take advantage of it??

I have a home gym, some free weights and bench which I hit hard every 2nd day. My neighborhood is pretty nice for walking with some challenging hills and great sunset views over Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains beyond. I try to walk everyday, 1.5 miles at least but 3-4 miles is ideal. When the weather is bad I can walk inside the massive complex where I work, miles of perfectly flat and straight halls but then there's stairs too - wohoo! I carry 3 lb dumbbells when I walk, or 10-20 pounds in a backpack. When I get to an uphill I walk as fast as possible, sometimes jog. I always crank my MP3 player while exercising.
Whenever it works out I'll skip my usual exercise for something really good, like 18 holes of golf on a ridiculously hilly course (never use a cart), or hike one of the many glorious hiking trails within an hours drive, paddle my canoe through the hundreds of spectacular waterways nearby, snowboarding nearly non-stop for 8 hours might be my favorite workout of all, the quads burn like they're on fire! Speaking of which, I like to swing a splitting maul for hours at a time - turn a huge pile of free pine logs into a huge pile of firewood. I like to keep a fire going while I work just 'cause I like the way it smells.
Obviously I agree with others here about variation, it's important not to dread your exercise. Better still, find ways to make it the best part of your days if you can.

I try to play racquetball once week, run a mile or so three times a week and walk my dogs in a hilly area every other day.
I'm a newly diagnosed T2 and I find that exercise along with metformin really helps me control my BG levels.

There are few trails behind our house so my husband and I are going to get snowshoes this weekend and try them on right away! I'm sooooooo excited!
