Dirty Toilets

Hello all,

New to the forum, but I've got a question that's been bugging me for over a year now.

Do you guys find that your toilets get dirty really quickly? More often than that of a non-diabetic?

I know my blood sugar is usually high, and I thought that maybe sugar in the urine might make a breeding ground for bacteria or something. Just trying to find out if I'm crazy or not.

Any comments would be appreciated, I've been browsing around and you seem like a great bunch of people.

Hello Kevin. First off I'd like to welcome you to the Forums. This is the greatest bunch of people and I'm sure you'll find more help, support, answers, and friendly people than you ever thought possible :)

Interesting question, unfortunately one I don't have an answer to :p . I've never noticed hygiene problems with my toilet; but then again I've always had relatively good control and I also try to clean my bathroom at least 3 times a week. Your theory does make sense though; perhaps one of our many members can correlate or even supply an answer for you.

Can't say ive noticed that problem, although I agree with shy that it does make sense. Do you have celiac disease as well, cos if that was the case you toilet would deffo get dirtymore quickly.

I'm not familiar with this disease. I haven't been diagnosed with it, but just for my edification, what is it?

As for cleaning 3 times a week, that sounds about right. I seems that usually two or three days after I clean it, it's really dirty again.

And you're right DeusXM, there isn't a whole lot else to do in Canada :-)

ACK!!! Plenty to do in Canada... Just give me a week or so and I'll come up with a long list ;)

I clean 3-4 times a week. Must! I'm the only diabetic in the family and I do the least mess. I find that opening windows and letting air in helps. Less mildew! Trapped in humidity is the worse SmackDog...

Kevin, if you're not already using bleach to clean your toilet, I suggest you do so. Just don't mix it with any other cleanser as it can cause toxic fumes. Do not, I repeat do not use a toilet brush; you'd be surprised how many germs proliferate on those suckers. Gloves and a clean rag are the most sanitary way to wash your toilet. If you're squemish and must use a brush, soak it in bleach and rinse it out really well between uses.

Celiac disease (Sorry if that is the wrong spelling) is an alergy to wheat. I don't really know much about it either, but it is an alergic reaction to wheat which causes dihorria. It's not directly related to diabetes (I don't think) but is much more common in people with type 1 diabetes. Don't worry about it or convince yourself you have it though, cos even within that population it is still fairly rare.

A 5% soln of bleach will kill anything bacterial so it doesn't have to be real strong but I do agree with the bleach soln.

Water is the universal solvent for cleaning and even vinegar can help with minerals deposits I believe.

You might consider using only Ammonia as it CLEANS and
DEORDORIZES. You use 125-250 ml/ 5 L of water. However, DO NOT USE WITH BLEACH!!! My mother's soln for cleaning was Ammonia and it gets used for all-purpose household cleaning,laundry, stain removals, & wax stripping. The above listed amount can be used for cleaning walls, floors, counter tops, appliances, bathtubs,sinks, garbage pails and toilet bowls. Windows, wax stripping, laundry and stain removal use a different amt. of soln.

Urea breaks down in the urine and produces an awful smell and with any sugars in there will be a breeding ground for bacteria.
Bacteria tend to roughly double every min. so even after one flush there may still be some that found a nice warm place to remain in the toilet and are breeding away.<smile>

Shy gave you some good solns with the gloves and/or using a brush. I am just picturing my son being told he had to clean the toilet 3 x /week and I'm roflmao.

Hope you can use some of these solns and I give you a bonus for posting such an interesting question.<smile>

I always use bleach in my toilet. I just make sure to put the fan on though cause it bothers my lungs.

Really...? EEk! I really didn't know that. I just scrubbed my whole bathroom clean with bleach and surface spray stuff :eek: Theres no windows in there either... Is my bathroom Toxic now then? :confused:

Wow, what a strange question... LOL

I know that the type of water you have may depend upon how dirty things look / get. If you have well water w/ no softener you may experience rust colored stains or even a film in your tubs / toliets, where as with city water which is often chlorinated(sp) a bit, you will have less of this problem.

I think the danger lies in mixing bleach with other cleaners that contain ammonia. That creates a dangerous gas - my recollection of high school chemistry isn't good enough to remember what is is.
