View Full Version : I found the pizza solution...

...though it's not as easy as it seems!
I haven't done pizza too often since mdi...and some of your stories about it sort of scared me off for a long time....I'm really not a huge pizza fan, anyway.
But....last night we took about 58 teenagers from our church's youth group down to the beach. After running around with all these kids for about an hour (it was HOT) we had more pizza's than I've ever seen at one time in my life delivered. I ate THREE slices, which is a lot for me, and I didn't bolus until about midway through eating (didn't plan that, just too much commotion going on with all those kids!) and I was high to begin with (blame kids passing out cookies on the bus we took down ;) )....so anyway, knowing how I do when I'm running around and hot, I bolused VERY conservatively...full correction for the high, but about a unit less that I would normally take for that carb amount. At the time I was thinking that I didn't want to go low while responsible for all these kids, and if I was high I'd take a correction when I got home.
Well, two hours I was right on target. Not too suprised, figured the kicker was coming. I checked again at 3rd and 4rth hour....no problems, no high...You would have thought I'd had steamed chicken for dinner! It didn't rise over night, either.
I've been thinking this over a bit today....most days by the time we have dinner I'm pretty much done for the day....I walk the dog, but other than that, I'm chilling at that point. So what I'm wondering is if all the before/after exercise while eating pizza basically cancelled out the usual effect that I get from high fat food...you know...a two hour low, or close to low then a four hour sky high.
I'm curious...you experts out there....is there some possible connection with all of this, or did I just get off easy????
And if there is a connection, next time you want pizza, just round up a huge crowd of teenagers to get crazy with!

You've given a perfect example of doing good most of the time and going off the wagon for a moment. It's not so bad.

For me pizza and chinese food is either perfect readings like you had or all **** has broken loose kinda day, I can't explain it either. I really think it depends on the brand and how much exercise or running around you do. For pizza or chinese food to be good the Moon has to be aligned perfectly with Saturn! IDK!:D

3 slices? Sometimes I end up eating the whole thing. :D Also, if you have thin crust pizza, it has a lot less carbs and won't cause as much of the well known "pizza effect".

Was it thin crust? I find I do very well when it's thin crust pizza with only cheese and not all the other toppings.

Pizza I've never had trouble with...call me lucky, but not so bad.

Thin crust helps...

When Tony did taekwondo (on shots, prepump) we used pizza as a means of keeping him from going low, and never noticed any highs from it. Now he's given up on taekwondo and it's harder to regulate. Pizza has it's place. Just not on the table in front of an inactive diabetic teenager!!

It wasn't thin crust...it was the hand tossed crust (Dominoe's) and the topping was bacon!

I had Pizza Hut last night. Pepperoni Lovers - Hand Tossed crust. I had two peices and two cheesebread sticks (ate WAY too much, too! Felt over full for HOURS) I bolused 7u, a little conservative, since I started out at a BG of 78. Two hours later I was 150 (I tad high, maybe shouldda took 8u), three - 142, five - 112. This morning about 10:30 I was 133, BUT, I did wake up at 5am and well, I had a "snack" of a piece of pizza, and didn't check my BG OR bolus for it! *my bad* With a good 8 hours of no food, and a shot of NPH (when I got up), I was 111 this afternoon.

Now if I eat the pizza from our local pizza/italian deli place, Johnny's New York Pizza, I eat one slice, which is HUGE, and I do perfectly fine. Though, their crust is pretty thin. Even with a Calzone, I do pretty good! *shrugs* Go figure!

I would say tho, Holly, that it was all the energy you were expending! ;)

Yes, I definitely believe it was the exercise that pulled you through. If you eat three slices tomorrow night with the same kind of crust and have no exercise to compensate and take the same amount of insulin as before, you will have a high blood sugar for sure.

My solution is to take the pizza home, go to a private room with the pizza and a ziplock sandwich bag. Chew the pizza slowly and savor the flavor, but do NOT swallow. Spit it out into the sandwich bag. Only a little of the pizza will ever reach your stomach. No blood sugar high, no weight gain. But you did enjoy the pizza! ight? I do this with pizza, doritos, potato chips. french fries. pop corn, etc. I hav done that for years. I know, I am gross, but it works!!!!!

So who wins the weirdo award, me or pizzaman? LOL! At least my current 14 day blood glucose average is 99 and my current A1c is 5.6.

I think that for me i can eat anyway i want during the day, and have beautiful bloodsugars, like you at night, if it is too much fat or protien whoa watch out, but if I try my hardest not to slow down, till about 3 hrs or so after a meal, that has high fat high protien I usually don't have to worry so much, so i think activity plays a big factor especially in the evening for dinner, for me if I know I am gonna be a lazy butt, I eat oatmeal or a small turkey sandwhich, or if I truly want to eat dinner....I eat it before 6, so I know that by the time I slow down which is 8ish, i get no rise, so yea pizza works for me too especially at lunch LOL..

5 Slices every monday, 4 units a slice = 20 units. I'll stay between 90-110. Good game. LoL.

The chain pizza shop most likely have the cheap sauce on them which is as bad as the crust. A mom and pop shop probably make their own quality sauce, at least they do around me. I give my dog the crust to cut out most of the carbs.
But I do eat the pizza. Could not spit it out, maybe i'm too cheap. But I do eat a piece or 2 and then wait awhile before eating more to reduce the load
