nsulin after meal

I want to ask,that if ane forgets or due to any reason does not inject Insulin and takes meal.Can the Insulin be taken after some time of meal?Will it work then?

Hello Rustam, Traditionly to take the insulin shot before you eat, However you can take your shot as soon as you remember but then if you remember say three hours after you have eaten then it will be to late and you will have a low!! and you don't want that.

What Peter says is partly true. In the mean time your body has gotten rid of some of that sugar through the urinary tract. You may have to take slightly less insulin or risk going low.

Personally I'd take the full dosage and maybe even some extra. My goal would be to get rid of those high sugars asap. I'd then plan for a snack say 3 or 4 hrs later to cover the back end of my extra insulin.

If I was delayed (and it happens for varied reasons) I would test to see what my glucose level had risen to...bolus for that amount (correction) and maybe a bit more if I think I'm still digesting food.

I never bolus before a meal when eating in restaurants...I wait to see what I actually eat then bolus immediately after...depending on the surroundings that will be at the table, restroom (my first choice) or in my car.

Sometimes if it's a large meal (Italian) and drawn out, then I will bolus a little before the meal and a second bolus an hour or so later. In Italy, meals take hours to finish. Some restaurants in US are similar, but Americans tend to eat very quickly, IMHO.

Same thing at dinner parties, I wait to see how much I eat, then bolus. This has prevented many lows from not being able to control the food. If I eat a lot of appetizers during socializing, I usually bolus for those then a second bolus later for the meal. Again, it depends on the meal timing.

The package info on Humalog says (or used to say) that it could be taken 15 prior or immediately after eating. So, there is a little leeway on that. I personally run low sometimes if I take it 15 minutes prior, but it depends on what my starting trend is (low?) and what I'm eating.

Well, sorry, my humalog (fast-acting) answer above won't make much sense. I can't remember my Humalin R days much, except it used to kick me in the rear about 3 hours after taking...I was always in an important staff meeting, never failed.
