I was glad to find out that Chinese food did not spike my blood sugar. I had Chicken with Brocoli (no rice), egg drop soup and one spring roll. BGLs at 2 hours were 104, 3 hours 109, 4 hours at 100. This has always been one of my favorite foods and glad that I can still eat it with out too much concern.

Chinese food send my bg through the roof. Its the only time my reading will go as high as 16 or 288.

Don't get too excited. Chinese food is one of the mystery foods. You may have been fine this time, but next time your BG can go nuts. Last night, I had Chinese food with brown rice. I'm a vegetarian, so there was quite a bit iof wheat gluten. I also had won ton soup and fried dumplings. I figured I'd need about 8 to 10 units, but I planned on splitting the dose. I took 5, and about 4 hours later, my BG was 209, so i took another 4. Not bad considering I pigged out. In the past, I've had to take 15 units or more for the same food.

Chinese food is kind of a split dose and watch the bg's three hours after the fact.....cause the rise happens a lot two to three hours later...and then lasts for hours and hours a lot of the times, i haven't attempted chinese food since i have been on the pump and before hand i would just deal with the highs and get them down cause chinese food was not something i ate all the time anyway....but if your on the pump I would dual wave for about four hours, and if your not check the blood sugar and a unit or so every hour would do the trick, it always did for me, and I would give a unit till my sugars read under 120, then I felt safe...

Also find a chinese resteraunt that doesn't put msg in there food they are out there and they are a little nicer on your blood sugars then the chinese with msg in it...

I've never had anymore of a problem with chinese than any other type of food. I'm always puzzled by those that say chinese sends their numbers through the roof as it never happens to me.

I think it's OK as long as you avoid the fried and breaded items.

The only time Chinese causes me a real problem is when I eat rice or noodles or the eggrolls. It seems like Chinese is like all my foods, if I stick to the meats and veggies, there is not too much problem. I do split my Novolog with almost any "eat out" food. Even pizza is Ok, if I am careful not to eat too much and split my Novolog.

I do well with some Chinese foods.........beef or chicken & broccolli or boneless spare ribs. I do my best to avoid the rice and the noodles. What I miss the most is Sweet & Sour Chicken!

I am glad you said this, I was beginning to think I was the only one that hasn't ever had problems with this. It is my favorite food and I think I could just about eat it everyday, and it hasn't once spiked me. When I was first diagnosed in May I just knew I'd have to give this up, but surprisingly it hasn't hurt me even one time.

I am not a "pigging out" kind of person and maybe this is the difference. To me pigging out is if I go back for seconds, which to the normal person, would be not even one plate full of fiood at a buffet. (I hate my food to touch, so my plate is like a kid's plate. LOL)

I wonder if it has to do with the food eaten and the type of rice? I ONLY eat white steamed rice and my most usual dish is pepper steak w/peppers and onions.

Either that or just the fact that all our bodies are different and what effects one doesn't affect others.

Chinese food can be good for you because it usually has a lot of veggies. Watch the fried stuff and the rice. Only really bad thing about it is the sodium content can be extremely high, bad if you have high blood pressure.

The chinese use long grain rice with will release a higher amount of glucose when digested. The best rice to eat is basmati has a lower glucose release. I have just had spare ribs in sauce and that spiked me as well. I think they must use quite a bit of sugar in their sauces.

I do well with Chinese food, as long as I avoid white rice and wonton soup. We have a PF Chang's in town that serves brown rice...i've found several dishes I can eat without problems. I think it's a very individualized thing, therefore testing before and after eating is critical to see how it affects the individual.

Chinese doesn't massively cause me problems either - granted, I have to bolus more for it than I would for most meals I eat, but then again that's because I know it already has more carbs in it that most of the meals I usually have. Same with pizza too. Although I realise that the situation's different for T2s.

I've been all over the orient and also in the US, chinese eat short grain, very starchy rice. Very bad for you. Long grain is preferable. Most of their sauces in American buffets are salty and loads of corn syrup. You also have to watch out for vegetarian meats. They make it with wheat gluton.
You can eat fairly well at even a buffet, its portion control and selecting item like you would any other food place. I lost my desire for chinese when I could no longer consume mass quantities at a sitting.

the only problems i have with chinese take-out meals is the rice, if i ditch the rice i dont get a problem.

Indian seems to have a lot of oil in it so that gives me different issues, but i still like to enjoy every now and then.

brown rice sounds like an option worth trying out, i seem to remember i spiked less with brown pasta once.

food for thought as they say....
